Original delinquency?

My husband's credit report includes the student loans he went into delinquency on, which he did more than 7 years ago -- closer to 9! Since the time of original delinquency he's made payments through a collection agency but as I understand it, that should be irrelevant to the original date of delinquency. Do I have it wrong? Obviously, having the student loan off his credit would improve matters dramatically for us.
How should we go about disputing it? Do we dispute with the collections agency, the CRA, both? And is it true that they owe him a thousand bucks for "re-aging" the account and keeping it on his credit for more than 7 years?

So the student loan should disappear from his credit 7 years after the default date? In which case something fishy is still going on, because even working from the default date, that was more than 7 years ago.

He says all of the big 3 are reporting it. And apparently I got it wrong -- it's not even in default. He rehabbed it and it's been in good standing with payments on time since January 2009!

So who is reporting? When you rehab, only the guarantor is removed. The lender/servicer who originally filed the default remains. When did it originally default?

OK, I finally had a look at the actual credit report myself, which clarified my husband's vague (and, as it turned out, inaccurate) descriptions.
What's going on is that he's incorrectly reported as being 90 days past due right now -- so we need to contact the CA with records from the bank of his automatic payments. Relatively simple fix, I hope, all as it should be beyond that. Thanks for your help.
