The most reliable information I can find indicates that under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, most kinds of debts can only be reported for 7 years after the original delinquency. How does one determine exactly when the original delinquency was, when there's no date (or an inaccurate/illegal/misleading date) on the credit report?

My husband's credit report includes the student loans he went into delinquency on, which he did more than 7 years ago -- closer to 9! Since the time of original delinquency he's made payments through a collection agency but as I understand it, that should be irrelevant to the original date of delinquency. Do I have it wrong? Obviously, having the student loan off his credit would improve matters dramatically for us.

How should we go about disputing it? Do we dispute with the collections agency, the CRA, both? And is it true that they owe him a thousand bucks for "re-aging" the account and keeping it on his credit for more than 7 years?

OK, I finally had a look at the actual credit report myself, which clarified my husband's vague (and, as it turned out, inaccurate) descriptions.

What's going on is that he's incorrectly reported as being 90 days past due right now -- so we need to contact the CA with records from the bank of his automatic payments. Relatively simple fix, I hope, all as it should be beyond that. Thanks for your help.
