i worked to boost my score for almost two years and from 580 brought it to 701 (experian).i have 3 secured credit cards (250-300$ limit each),they report to my files and i have jewelry store card which reports 1800 credit line.(i dont use it but it is there,Kay jewelers). i need to improve my score for a big school loan, i am a grad student and have no income other than governmental loans....how do i go about doing this. i understand that simply opening another credit card will actually lower my score. all my balances on my current cards are very low and i am out of ideas how to boost my score fast...please advise:)

Hi Iyanyu,
It's good to know that you are able to upgrade your credit score to 701 on your own. Yes it does take bit of time but if you try to stick to certain points, you can make it shine very soon.

To improve your credit score you need to take care of certain things. Always pay the bills on time and even if you have missed payments try to stay current. Pay your installment loans such as auto, mortgage or student loans as that will help your score.

Try to keep low balances on revolving accounts like credit cards. The older the credit history the better it is, so do not close unused or old credit cards. You can request for a goodwill adjustment if you have been a good customer to a lender. As your score gets calculated on the basis of the info in your credit report so, if you figure out any inaccuracy then dispute it with the credit bureau. Scrutinize the reports at periodic intervals.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT take out a private student loan for Graduate School. DO NOT! Unless you are going into some field that you know will give you huge earning potential it is a horrible idea. A private student loan is absolutely the worst kind of debt you can ever have EVER. I know this was not your question, but I feel compelled to offer this advice. I have a $25,000 student loan from Sallie Mae, now over $30k, it is the bane of my existence.

You shouldn't open any new credit card accounts that aren't important Generally when you open a new credit account, it will lower your credit score slightly, at least for a short period of time.;)

I have a nearly perfect credit report. I only owe $2000 and am not late. My credit score is only 700.
