With the tougher credit card rules and todays economy aong other things is it better to have your credit card debt spread out over multiple cards to reduce the card usage % or to have fewer cards nearly maxed out?

It's hard to say. Prospective creditors look at the amount of credit available to you, so if you have a lot of credit cards, that will be taken into consideration...even if they aren't carrying balances, or have no balance.

It never looks good to be maxed out, so...I'd say, they're both bad options :)

The reason I ask is because I was wanting to consolidate some of my my credit cards with a balance transfer offer of 2.99% until June 2012, but this will max out that particular card. I have probably 7 or 8 cards but only 4 have balances and currently range from 1/4 to 1/2 of their potential usage.
