Okay, so I received a called about a supposed old debt that I owe from the notorious collection agency, Forster & Garbus last week. Not surprisingly, they were extremely rude and nasty.

I sent the DV letter and received the green card back today.

What should my next steps be?

I've read that at this stage I should now dispute the debt with the credit reporting company. Is this correct? If so, which reporting company do I dispute it with? All of them? Where can I obtain free copies of my credit report from all of them?

Just want to ensure I have my ducks lined up properly.

Thanks!

Now you wait. If you haven't received proper validation from them in about 30 days, then yes, check your credit report. You can receive one free credit report per year here https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp. If they show up on your report, dispute it with whichever bureau is showing the trade line. It may be on all 3 or just one or two.

By law, the collection agency should send you a letter within 5 days after receiving the validation letter. But, you should wait for 30 days to give the collection agency a chance to properly validate your debt.

If they can't validate the debt within 30 days, then take out your report from all the 3 credit bureaus and check out if the account is showing in the reports.

If the account is there in the report, send letters to the credit bureaus to dispute the account. Attach copies of the documents you've as proof. The bureaus will contact the agency and ask them to verify the account and if they cannot, the account will be removed from your credit report.
