How to pay off debt directly once turned over to collections

After a long search we came up with a great debt consolidation loan with manageable payments. We've been in debt settlement for two years with little results. After the loan closes I will have checks to pay off each creditor personally but not the collection agencies. What's the best way to handle this situation? Do I call the creditors to negotiate the settlement with them, have the checks redrafted to the collection agencies or simply send in the payments.
nopooh

You can call the original creditor. Sometimes they can pull the debt back, but not always. If they can work with them not the ca. If they can't then you will have to deal with the ca and have them redrafted.
I don't know if there is a way to force the original to take the debt back if they have sold the debt.

I believe you can always try to negotiate the debt settlement to try to get a better deal. If you can't get the original creditor to do it, I have had pretty good luck in negotiating a lower settlement with the collection agencies, saving me a few hundred on each one. Don't tell them you are getting a loan or they will try to get more out of you. I told them that I have several debts and trying to clean it up, bottom line, who ever cooperates gets paid first. This tactic has worked out well for me. Don't know if you want to use this approach or not. You definately do not want to let them know that you are borrowing. Creditors will often watch your credit report to see if you are planning to borrow and this is when they start contacting debtors again. They will try to get every dime they can out of you, but you want to save every dime. Hope this helps. Again this has just been my experience.
Have these debts that are with the collection agencies been sold
Have these debts that are with the collection agencies been sold, or just turned over to them for collections?
If they have been sold, they are out of the original creditors hands, and you would have to see what you can work out with the collection agencies. I haven't had very good luck with the collection agencies wanting to work with me. I have done like fedup has done- send them a money order each month, they haven't turned it down.
Good Luck-let us know what happens..Karen :D
Does sending them payments stop them from taking you to court?

NOt always. There are some of the evil ones that will still take you to court. That is why it is so important to keep copies of all your payments so if they do take you to court you can show proof to the judge that you have been paying.

Who are the debts with? Are they credit cards, loans, what type of debt is it? do you know what collection agencies have them?

Out of curiosity, where did (what kind of institution, you don't have to be name specific ;) did you get your debt consolidation loan from? a bank? i'm unfamiliar with those kind of loans. sounds like you have to do the leg work yourself as far as negotiation. have you thought about a debt consolidation organization? they do the negotiation for you if you get the right company. I didn't know that you could get a debt consolidation loan. If you have to do the leg work yourself you should be able to negotiate your settlements as companies like to have something rather than nothing. Good luck to you and please keep us posted. Fedup brings up some good questions regarding the type of debt you're ready to give y our checks to
