Hello all! I looked at my report a frew months ago and found an old collection from Qwest. The report was new, but the data was old (I have not had a Qwest account in six years). I was surprised, but had a family emergency soon after that wiped this from my mind so I did not deal with it immediately. I looked at my report again recently, and I now have that collection, plus the same collection now reported by Centurylink, who bought out Qwest a while ago. The first collection agency did not sell this debt to another....I recently recieved a letter from them too. Where do I start clearing this up? I do not want to pay two agencies for the same debt.

Just because they are reporting it doesn't necessarily mean they still are collecting it. Credit reports are filled with errors and BS on the part of CAs all the time. If I were in your shoes, I'd just dispute them both and in the mean time figure out your state's SOL and see if you still owe it.

Send them both the DV request letter in writing via certified mail with a return receipt request. The CA who will validate the debt properly, contact with them and make your payments.

You should not pay a dime to both the collection agencies. Send DV letter to both of them. Find out which collection agency is able to validate the debt. Make payments to the one which validates the debt properly. Check out the SOL period in your state too.

Obviously Stevebarris doesnt understand that you cannot DV an original creditor. Qwest IS Centurylink...qwest was bought out as the original poster stated.

What state are you in?? When was the date of your last payment???
