UK credit card debt affecting US credit report

I have lived in the UK from 2002-04. I have about 8000 pounds in debt. I was unable to pay it back and have not made a payment since 04. I finally get a call today from a debt collections company from California asking me to confirm my Social and date of birth of which I said you have the wrong person. My main concern is can this affect my US credit report? I understand my UK credit is bad but I am worried about my credit here.

Your Social will not be used in a foreign country, the call was probably about a domestic debt, or more likely - a scam/phishing expedition. No paper, no talk! File a complaint with the FCC and the FTC and your state Attorney General.

Is it not possible they sold my debt to this company cedar financial? They knew the last 4 of my social and birthdate?
