Old debt showing on credit report

You should be able to request a free copy of your credit report every year. You can also request a copy if you have been turned down for credit. I would ask the mortgage copy to provide a copy of the report so that you know which bureau is reporting and who it is reporting on. Then you can go online and dispute the item if it is past the 7 years.

If it was some type of judgement it may take longer than that to follow up. The Reporting Agency will then go out and remove the item from you report if necessary. I worked with Experion and they helped me clear up a lot of outdated items on my report.

when you say "old debt", do you mean an outstanding debt, a judgment, a foreclosure? The time limit for debts to appear on your credit report depends on the kind of debt it is. For most debts, the time limit is 7 years. For judgments or bankruptcies, it is 10 years. The debt could have been initiated in 1992, but if you were sued over it in, say, 2000, and you got a judgment against you, then that judgment can be reported for 10 years from when it occurred.
