I may be wrong here, but it sounds to me like your mortgage company was definitely in the wrong, and tried to cover their backsides after the fact.
Check your mortgage papers over closely to see if there are privacy statements in there that mention this type of situation.
Also, since you have registered with this site, a consultant in your area will be contacting you soon regarding debt consolidation or settlement programs. You may choose to utilize their services or not - but if you feel you do not need their services, please just let them know when they call.

I totally agree with Sue's advice regarding checking your mortgage disclosure info. I called Fifth Third the other day about the mortgage for our house, and they would not speak to me about it because the mortgage is in my husband's name. So, the fact that your mortgage company discussed your details with a family member without having your verbal or signed consent is just wrong.
Hopefully, your family member got the name of the person they spoke to, so you can make a complaint.
