I just received a call from someone saying he was from Calvary. He then said he had not gotten a response from something he had mailed me, read off my address and then asked if it was current. I asked what it was he said he sent me, but he would not answer until i said yes, that is my current address. Then he kept trying to talk, mentioned the last 4 of my social. And i kept trying to ask him where he was calling from and what he was calling regarding. He chastised me for interrupting. Finally said that an old bill of mine had been purchased by Calvary and how i would like to take care of it. I was trying to explain to him i was at work and did not have the time to talk, he then got kinda rude w/ me and said that i left my phone (cell) on.... I told him because my husband is deployed, yes i do leave my phone on. If something happens to my husband, i want to know. I would like to eventually pay this bill, but i am strapped for $$ right now, already trying to pay off other debts. Isnt there a bill that prevents collection agencies from calling when family member is deployed?

Welcome to the forums. You've come to the right place for help with debt and credit issues.

I've found a link to an article about an organization that helps military families with debt issues. If you would check your PM's, I will send it to you.

I don't know if that will help, but perhaps it will give you something to work with.

Also, since you have registered with this site, a consultant from your area will be contacting you soon to discuss your options for debt consolidation or settlement. If you feel you do not need their services, please let them know when they call. You might also ask them about your husband's deployment as it relates to debt collection.

All collection agencies are bound to follow the federal and state laws during their collections. The first thing to be done is to provide you the complete information of the debt in writing. You need to check the account and see if the calculations are done correctly. You should also be aware of the SOL in your state before doing a payment.

Calvery needs to give you the info in writing. If you haven't received anything in the mail yet, send a debt validation letter requesting for the details. Calling and discussing about the debt is not fair until you have it in writing.

As far as the deployment part, if there is any type of law preventing collection attempts it would most likely be toward the deployed spouse wouldn't it? My son-in-law was deployed in 2002 & 2004 to Iraq and they did not try and attempt to collect on an old debt until this year (he is now out of the service). I don't know if they didn't try and collect because of his deployment though.
