Is the payday lender legal in your state? If you're sure you owe them the money, you should get the debt validated from the CA as instructed by Paul. However, as per the FDCPA, the creditor needs to send you a DV notice within 5 days of initial communication or send you a collection notice, before they start the process of debt collection.

Actually, federal law requires they send you a dunning letter (not DV) within 5 days of initial contact.

I live in Alabama. I believe pdls are legal here. I had the loan with Pack Management.

Although PDLs are legal in AL, I didn't find Pack Management in the license database "http://www.bank.state.al.us/ADPSA_Licenses2.asp" of Alabama. So I don't think they are legal. Check the link illegal payday lender for info on how to deal with illegal lenders.
