Help me improve my score
Date: Fri, 06/16/2006 - 01:46
I joined this board in October last year and it's been tremendous help for me.
My credit is not very good; however, it's not bad also. I am trying to improve my score. My question is, how often should I check my score? Should I check all the three scores? Is there any cheaper way to check my score regularly, if yes, how can I opt it? Need your help.
Thanks
Erin

Need a cheaper way for credit scores.
Is there a cheaper way to check my credit score and credit report with every change in my credit score?

The best way I have found is to use a credit monitoring service. You can monitor all three. Go here. identitytheftresources.com/reviews_creditprotect.htm
This is just the one I use, there are others out there.

You may want to check your bank. My bank offeres a id theft inspect service that alerts me when something changes on my credit report and it shows all three of my scores. It's only $10/month. It's great because twice when it alerted me of changes... there were new accounts added that weren't even mine!!
I hope you find something that works for you!

At a minimum, check it every few months. This way you can keep up on everything and you don't have to worry about any surprises later on. I use a service from truecredit.com, it's about $11-12 a month, and you can update whenever you like (Every day if you feel like it) at no extra charge.

I suggest you to check your credit report monthly. You never know if a fraudulent entry hurts your ratings severely. The lenders might be interested in reviewing your ratings. Any incorrect info will affect your credit potential. You will like to fix it in advance.

I also use truecredit to monitor my score. I love it because not only can I check my credit report everday if I want to, but I get email alerts telling me if a change has posted to my credit report or a weekly alert that tells me no changes have posted to my credit report. It costs $14.95/month to have all three monitored but I think you can get just Transunion for $5.
I really like it because I can check anytime I want to and see how my credit score is progressing. It has also helped me because I have had fraudulent accounts opened in my name or inaccurrate information reported on my files, and because I get the email alert, I can stay on top of it and dispute everything right away so that my credit isn't affected for long. I had my personal information stolen MANY times so it also gives me that piece of mind that I know nothing is being opened in my name.

Hi erin,
Your credit scores are made up of several parts and the parts you can control are your balances and mixture of credit lines. The biggest part is length so the longer you have credit the higher the score.
According to myfico you need a good mixture of credit like 2 ccs, a store or gas card, car loan and mortgage. With this combo and low balances on CCs your credit scores will rise. It basicly takes time.
I agree, the credit monitoring services are quite valuable.
