Date Opened Collection Account

Make a long story short I had an account that I opened in 02 go into collections. I have been pst due on this account since 03. The account is showing on my credit report with a date opened of 7/20/2009. Thats is when the account went to collections. What is the date opened mean? Date it was first late or date that it first went to collections?
