It is that time again. Friday afternoon late and time for the Frog on Friday. This is when I like to just start a conversation about anything that has no relevance. There are so many people here I thought it would be interesting to hear about where people live. What better way than what they eat. Sort of like a Alton Browns road trip on cable.

Being that this is a pub and good pubs should have something to chew on, I thought I would start a topic about sandwiches. Being from the eastern seaboard, I traveled up and down frequently and everywhere you go there is a sandwich that seems to have itself rooted in the culture of the region. Let’s start in Maine where the lobster rolls and clam rolls rule. ( I should say lobstah.) Then down to Massachusetts where their long roll creation is called a grinder. When you reach southern Connecticut and Westchester County NY it becomes a wedge which evolves into a submarine or sub by the time you reach New Jersey. It is also called a hoagie or a hero. Hero which must have evolved from Gyro,( pronounced yero in Greek) that totally delectable Greek creation of seasoned and shaved ground lamb and beef served on a pita with a yogurt cucumber sauce called tzatziki. As you pass the Jersey Shore you will find that pork roll is a staple in the diet of the locals. Served on what they call a “hard roll” which is not really hard at all. Do not ask for that anywhere else though.

Now we have reached the Mid Atlantic where the blue claw crab is king. You can’t go to Baltimore’s inner harbor without having a crab cake on a toasted bun of a soft shelled crab sandwich for the more adventuresome. Now you keep moving south and the barbeque war rumblings begin. North Carolina with its vinegar mopped pulled pork sandwiches are to write home about. South Carolina has its own as does Georgia, all excellent and all with regional flare. Then you see signs that say “ you’ll love our gizzards!” Sorry I am not that adventurous.

Now I have arrived in sunny Florida where signs abound that say “hot pressed Cubans.”
No it is not an immigrant labor protest. It is another form of the long roll sandwich that was started by the wives of the farm workers from Cuba in the cane fields. It is a slice of roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickle slices with mayo on one side and mustard on the other. There is salami if you live in Tampa but never in Miami. The whole thing is pressed in a machine that looks like it belongs in a dry cleaners but the result is 15 inches of warm melted toasty goodness. I am not going to touch the panini thing. It is way too café chic to belong in a pub. Who wants to continue down the road to the other coast? Yummmm!

I hale from the midwest...Chicago to be exact...and am of Sicilian decent...only in CHicago can you get the best Italian Beef sandwiched...smokey beef in layers upon layers on crusty italian bread...topped with sauted onions, green peppers and garlic and dipped in au juice....mmmmm...then I moved here to Indiana where every restuarant has it's version of Pork tenderloin sandwiches...breaded and fried and served on a bun sometimes with pork gravy!

Frog, I am with you all the way down the eastern seaboard. I LLLOOOOOVVVEEE lobster rolls, especially from the little oyster shack near the twin lights...and I love crab cakes from the harbour in Baltimore...and how I miss Cuban sandwiches. May I go overseas... Friends of mine in Italy own a "deli".. my favorite sandwich there is fresh mozzarella, smoked sweet peppers, soprasatta, oregano and olive oil on home made italian bread and pressed. Now I live in rural Kentucky and if aperson wants a sandwich they go to Wendys or Subway or the deli at Wal-Mart

Okay, it's friggin 11:00pm and now I'm starving after reading this. Thanks a lot, frog! Being originally from New York, I was big on the sub sandwiches. Couldn't ask for a better one. Then in Kentucky, there's not a whole hell of a lot when it comes to a "real" sub. I'm still searching for something even close. Haven't found it yet. However, while in Florida for awhile (frog) I found that I loved the subs! I finally found "real" subs again. There are so many italians in New York, so that's why the subs were the best. Imagine my surprise to find so many italians in Florida and was in HEAVEN with the subs! I was happy with the food! Now, not too many italians in Kentucky! Damn! :?

What??? You worked in an italian deli? Oh, hell no! Where are you? I'm driving now so that you can make me a real italian sub! And when that restaurant is open, I don't care how far away you are, my big old butt is going to be there! Road trip for a "real" sub! Now I know I have a connection! :D

kash, don't get me started on New York pizza. Oh, please don't. I try so hard to get it out of my mind, but never can. All I'm going to say is New York has the BEST PIZZA ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH. I have tried every pizza place you can imagine (even the pizzas by the real italians in Florida), and I have found NOTHING that comes even close. Every time I go back to New York, I eat pizza every single day. Whoever is with me just wants to kick the crap out of me because I won't eat anything else! LOL!

Cannr
Next time I have pizza I will think of you. Wish I could send you some.
Morning,
Now start the Chicago- NY pizza wars. I think this one has been going on forever, NY pizza is the BEST!!!!!!We do have a deep dish type that I think is suppose to be like Chicago pizza, but the original thin crust has it beat.

Pizza wars have been going on for years. Being from Jersey I am partial to the thin but a sicilian that is cruchy on the bottom and light and airy in the middle and loaded on top is awesome too. I never met a pizza I didn't like. Where is the Connecticut crowd here. Wooster in Bridgeport! You have bragging rights too!

Representin' from California!

Okay, so toss some avacado on ANY sandwich and all of a sudden it becomes a "(your choice of meat) california sandwich". I see that SO often across the US and I laugh all the time. We do love our avacados here but damn, not that much.

Out here we are into the panini sandwich....cooked on a panini press you get those nice "grill lines" and its all hot and toasty. But I would take a cuban over a panini any day.

Also many ethnic type sanwiches, such as a Torta. In my hispanic home, these are a favorite. Similar ingredients as a burrito, but its all about the bread....gotta head to the panaderia (bakery) for the special rolls, then add carnitas, steak or chicken, then cilantro, onion radish, guacamole, lettuce and tomato. And some picante sauce.
Oh so good!

Ok Roxy, we definately did something wrong. We were suppose to lose not gain. I used to buy the WW treats. My problem was that I would eat the entire box at one time. If I bought 2 boxes , I would eat both boxes. I am being honest if there is food within arms reach I eat it.Oh I would treat myself because I went to a meeting. I would pick up some dinner on the way home. Usually Italian or any other food equally as fattening.

I am with you there...Actually when my husband was looking at getting activated he stepped up his physical training stuff and the rest of us paid dearly...we all lost lots of weight. He was a big eater meats and starches...no veggies. Now that I do not have to cook for him...we can actually eat lighter. I hate to cook so this works out well for me. My problem is I LOVE to eat..good rich food, can't and won't cook and really there are no decent restaurants around...

LOL...we are a very funny group and I wish we could take our show on the road!!!

In all honesty...At the age of 39-40 I lost 110 pounds...so losing 30 shouldn't be as hard!! The difference being I am 56 now and not as inclined to go running...my knees won't take it, dancing...I'm not dating so that would be in my apartment, all alone...and I now work about 45-50 hours a week..I guess I need to pick myself up off my computer chair and get my legs moving again!!!

I am sicilian...and as such a born cook...and I love to eat. I did home made pasta and sauce yesterday. The trick is simply: Eatless, move more!

I am Jewish and our lives revolve around food. Any bodies food . If we aren't eating we are talking about eating. If we are't talking about eating we are looking at what other people are eating. I cant help it, its genetic!!!!
Yes we are a funny group. We certainly could make a ton of money as comics. My God we have great material. Well ok now its time for lunch.

I am sitting here carb loading rigatoni and vodka sauce for lunch. I will be nodding at around three. It is harder morningstar at 56 than it was at 39 but you can do it as long as there are no health issues. I saw your pic right below mine in the HOF. It sure doesn't look like you are 56 and need to lose in that pic. I am 57 and also need to lose 30 pounds. Why rigatoni you ask? Its called saving money by bringing leftovers for lunch. I am surrounded by fast food where I work!
