Friday my small town Wal-Mart will be layong off 9 retail employees, the other Wal-Mart stores in our region will be laying off even more.

I simply don't get why they are laying off anyone yet still reporting a profit. They could simply postpone hireing.

i really don't shop wal-mart anymore.meijer is just as good as far as pricing on alot of merchandise.i just don't like wal-mart that much.doesn't suprise me though.same thing out by me.doesn't suprise me at all.

wow, that's interesting, FYI. The way I see it, Wal-Mart should be making money hand over fist in this recession. With the prices so low there, that's where a lot of people are shopping now.

I'm with you, Paul, though - I like Meijer better for some things - but not everyone has a Meijer, where pretty much anyone can get to a Wal-Mart. That's why it surprises me that they're laying people off.

Generally I don't like Wal-Mart either. We don't have a meijer (i don't even know what that is). The Wal-Mart I work at is not a supercenter, it's one of those rinky-dink ones. It's actually very nice there, the people actually care about customer service.

Oh I am not worried about it. Ironicly I will make more on unemployment that I did working at Wal-Mart and since I signed up for credit protection for my two credit cards, my cards will be paid off. This will allow me a chance to find a job that will allow me to still go to school but also give me a more financial benefit.

I work for walmart and I'll tell you first hand. Sales are down. It seems like every day our sales are 5-10% less then last year.

We haven't layed anyone off recently. However at christmas time we had to lay off all our holiday help 2 weeks before christmas and i'll tell you, our store manager was furious.

I didn't think that unemployment insurance was paid for part-timers and the reason so many big companies including gaming institutions in Nevada still hire two people for one job if union is not involved? How is unemployement higher than actual employment? Is it becuz fyi drawing off of earlier employment at another company? Sorry for asking I just never knew where you are paid more for unemployment than being employed and I honestly thought part timers didn't receive unemployment benefits part-time being 20 hours week or less? I also though credit protection only makes your payments for a certain time and allows you the extra time to find a job and not have to worry about your debts? I did not know they pay off your entire debt if you get laid off? If that is the case I will certainly buy the credit protection on all of my cards if the debt gets fully paid off if you get laid-off?

I worked 33 hours a week at Wal-Mart, that is the most they will give part timers in my area. My mom worked for the unemployment office for about 5 years and when she found out that I didn't even apply when I left my old job she turned my ears red. So I applied, but never received benefits because I did voluntarily leave that employer (I didn't expect to receive anything either.) If it wasn't for my mother I doubt I would get enough to help out financially.

I applied for extra insurance on my credit cards after leaving my previous employer (before Wal-Mart) in the event something happened, along with credit protection. I apologize for not explaining myself better.

Most people who are low to mid level income don't really care for their jobs. It does help to like your job to become more productive however, it isn't necessary. Anyone who has a good work ethic can do well just about anywhere. I like to think I have a good work ethic :).

In this economy I think they should just be thankful for the job they have and if they can get throught these hard times without suffering any more hardships or getting further into debt until the economy and unemployment job availibilty situation gets better>>>good luck to all Americans searching for jobs and working jobs at lower wages than they are used to>>but I would say if you don't like where you work right now there are probably 1,000 people in the unemployment lines who would love to have your job and be grateful to have it>>like hoff said they need to eat and pay bills so suck it up and do a good job unless you have something else lined up because I know big companies right now who lay-off at random--best from of keeping roster of employees scared and in uproar over they might be next if they don't excel in their posistion--the mega companies are losing a bit of money from sales but they are gaining money by benifits and raises that they now have excused for not giving and frequently "lay-off" 50 people but will hire 100 people the following week!

to above post my husband worked in oil industry for 35 years got laid/off and lost big part of his retirement in their "settlement package" ~the company who laid him off hired twice the workers they laid off at 1/3 the wages of the people they got rid of and are now "ahead"~~~he now has to work 12 more years to try and make up his "losses" he thought he had worked all those years to build up~~when oil got very lowest at new company he is with he got his company truck taken away and got "demoted" to pusher ....last week got his truck back and $3 more dollars of his "new" wages and 10 more hours a week of work~we have a lot of bills and two more children we still need to put through college ~he is happy just to still have a job even though he is making a third of his wages~ I am hoping for a time when the economy gets at least favorable instead of still scary for so many people out there~ scared people do not spend money they do have and people not spending money gets more and more people laid off in the long run who will not have money to spend until they can find another job and they can not find another job unless people have money to spend which creates more jobs Wal-mart is still showing profits and my sister in law in our community just got a raise and a promotion so most wal-marts i think are thriving and she tells me that here it is kinda hard to get laid off after they spend time training you they offer transfers other depts. etc but lay-off is odd it hurts their business if america thinks their business is bad where they too have to lay people off? maybe just weeding out people who dont fit their mold? especially if newer employees they are going to replace with same wage paying jobs?

Just because I wasn't always happy where I worked didn't mean I wasn't greatful to have a job. I know the economy sucks right now and how hard it is to find a job, especially where I live. In fact I would love to not have the TWC call me at 6:42 AM to verify my lay-off, like they just did. Who calls before 8 am on a Saturday morning!

I read on CNN the other day that Wal-Mart was creating 22,000 jobs. I was pretty upset even if those jobs aren't going to be in TX. A friend from Wal-Mart told me that they were still cutting hours at where I used to work.

Okay after reading some of the above posts I think maybe this might be happening and I could be very wrong I saw the documentary about walmart the high cost of low price and what this company is capable of maybe they are doing these type of layoffs to scare the employees who are still on the payroll into putting in those extra hours and into not bucking the system they have in place? I think if they cut hours it would be to save money ( i.e. hiretwo part timers they do not have to pay unemployment benefits on etc in this economy two people would be happy to have any work rather than no work? etc I do think if they lay you off there is an agenda behind that decision fyi is there a Sams Club in your area? they are hiring where I live and I know several people very happy with wages and their job and part of same corporation I think?

you need to relocate if you would like to have a career with this company!!!! They just hired 79 people in my small community today? I do not like Wal-mart generally--they ran many small American retailers out of business----but they are one of the biggest hiring companies in town-----wal-mart does not have a hiring freeze in any town in America as far as I know of???????--f.y.i. what 50 nile radius are you living in? And this is gonna break my heart if even Wal-mart couldn't give you a job!!! But------are there collection agencies in your 50 mile radius? I can't believe that you had such a fantastic job with a certain collection agency and because you said you---QUIT and --then---relocated you can not make ends meet and! can not find a decent paying job in the field you are most adept at? Sorry if I am trying to give ya a BUMP to HELLO!!!Seek work in the field you have "experience" in???????????????

I won't relocate again and I am not looking for a career future with a retail company. Wal-Mart was/is a stepping stone. We live in a perfect town/community to raise 4 kids and my husband has a very good job with the state. I did have a very good job with the collection agency I worked for and yes, I did quit because I made a choice to be there more for my family and because that type of work isn't something that would be able to sustain a stable career out of. I made the choice to go to school for an ADN degree. The medical field is almost recession proof and a wonderful career.

I am seeking employment that will work with a school and family schedule. There are jobs out there, I just have to keep applying. If it eventually means I have to work at Jack in the Box so that I can still spend time with my family and go to school for a better future then that is what I am going to do! However, I am going to exaust some more options before that. I have experience in retail, grocery, fast food, office enviornment, telemarketing, non-profit... I have a lot of experience doing a lot of things though several part time jobs over the years. I am hoping that it will not take very long.

Good luck and congratulations!

I agree all companies in America are hiring 2 employees to cover one job so they do not have to pay benefits---Wal-mart put so many small companies out of business and reported today that their profits are down..they are not the SAM people who had integrity....they will do what they have to do even if it means Americans will suffer (from their China imports that have not enough checks and boundaries and KILLand cause suffering to americans) cheap is good but if
!if! if !~America can get back to an industrial nation where we can manufacture BETTER products--where we actually care if the consumer lives or dies---DOES China care if they do something wrong TOXIC where your pet or child DIES? of course not why should they? they were only trying to get their depressed economy on the map---hey hey hey good going! at the same time they and WAL MART ran many American mom and pop companies out of business who followed all of the American rules????????? Wal mart does not care about anything now other than making the most profits possible----they are sleeping with CHINA not AMERICA!!! I finally woke up and haven't bought anything at Wal mart for 6 months---guess what? I think many Americans woke up as well--Wal-mart profits finally fell---WHY SHOULD we support the walmart china products???? Wal-mart could put many Americans to work--instead they have run many many americans out of business so that we America today can purchase cheap China crap that kills us cuz China doesn't give a crap that they kill Americans wake up they kill their own WHY should they care one iota about protecting us? Wal mart...leave china in the dust please!!!wake up stop thinking about the profits think about all the kaziillions you have earned and try to at least do the right thing now--this is a new world and time we are dealing with now!!! We need to start a boycott Walmart unless they provide American manufaturers products to their Amewrican consumers!!! WE NEED TO DEMAND THIS OR NOT BUY A THING!!!!!!!

fyi did you get a new job in an HONEST field or go back to your "debt collector" life long experience that you made such a profit at and were so good at? Dang with the credit card companies increasing the minimum payment to OUTRAGEOUS numbers in the past year====I would think it would have been very profitable for you to return to the field of your expertise that you have acquired from your life long experience???? Please give us a follow-up here :-)
