Good question. Not sure you can. If he co-signed then he is responsible for the car debt, I don't really see any way around that.

Hi Mary...Same thing happened to one of my clients. Because your borrower co-signed for someone they agree to pay the debt if the debt defaults. Most underwriters view this as a debt of their own. It just depends on what the guidelines say with the lender you're dealing with.

There's not really much he can do. Other than pay what is needed to prevent the car from being repossed.

I know it's frustrating because so much work is done and to be so close to closing and something pops up.

Basically he has shown that he does not accept responsibility as a co-signer. After all, he agreed to pay if the primary borrowe didn't. The mortgage company would likely think "if he co-signed on a car and let it get repossessed, then what good is he as a co-signer on a mortgage?"
