Hello my am 28yrs old and i will be buying my first house in the next 8 months. I have been trying to improve my credit to make it easy. My credit isnt good. my transunion is 547, experian is 603,my equifax is 514. i went to the bank a few months ago and took out a 6 month loan as well as a secure credit card. I have been making the payments on time but its not helping my scores much. I have a total of 5,400.00 in collections that are closed accounts. They are all med bills dating back to 2003. My question is if i pay all that debt off will it make a big enough inpact on my scores that will make it easier for me to get a house? I have also looked into adding a couple of tradeline accounts 2 my report. they would be 3 years old with 15,000 limits with only 10% of the limit used with a perfect payment history. Would just adding them be enough? Im lost here and need help bad. I have the means to go either way but i need to do what will improve my score and chances of being able to get a house. Any ideas or help would be great.

If the collections are all med bills, if you haven't already, I would dispute them...if they can't validate, then they can't collect and therefore must be removed from your reports.

CA will lie to you to get them to pay...do not pay them until you receive the DV back and a letter stating that they will remove them...keep in mind, most CA don't bother to remove them once the account is paid, and the CRA's position is that they can't remove accurate info...so, IMO...I would dispute those collections.

Also, since they date back to 2003 - ALMOST the 7 year reporting time frame is up and they should drop off your report soon.

It's gonna take some work, but you can get it done.

It sounds like you have a good mix of trade lines on your reports. A major factor is the % of credit utilized on your unsecured credit (CC). Since you are around 10% utilization, you are in good shape...you'll see that once you get those collections off, your report will improve...I've seen typically around 7 -10 points improvement for each collection account removed, in my experience.
