Forbearance Agreement

Has anyone had luck getting their mortgage lender to agree to forbear their mortgage for a specified period of time?
If so, how? I've been dealing with Wells Fargo and despite the fact they sent me a letter saying that I had options to avoid foreclosure (including forbearance), when I talk to their representatives they act like they've never heard of it before. It's really frustrating.
