loan modification

I have taken a mortgage loan 2 years back. I am going through a financial crisis and are unable to make the mortgage payments. My friends are suggesting me to go for loan modification. Now what I want to know is that does loan modification hurt credit score?

My mortgage is with CitiMortgage and 8 months ago, I did a loan modification with them. No, it has not hurt my credit at all. I went from 6.5% to 4.10%. Saved almost $220 in house payments.
