We just got the property tax bill for about $8K. We're in CA. It's due 6/30. We are trying to negotiate a loan mod with Chase and negotiate debt settlement with various CC cos. I do not want to put any money toward the home. We are working with a loan mod company and they are working on trying to get the property tax bundled into the monthly payment. Would be interested to get advice as to whether or not we should pay? Should we contact the county and let them know we can't pay right now? Our first priority is to settle CC debt. We owe about $115K.

Hi, you may ask the loan modification company directly whether they can include the past taxes into the modified payment. Otherwise, you may have to deal directly with IRS and set up a payment plan to clear the tax backlog. It's important to take immediate steps as the IRS is capable of putting lien against the property, which would be the worst situation.

It's great that you are trying to payoff your credit card debt but IMO the tax issue should get the priority now. The IRS is the mighty creditor and often unforgiving.
