In one of the other forums they talked about a company called Prosper. It is an online lending and borrowing site. Where can I found more info about this site. It sound like a good way to invest capital but the risk of lending money was not explained in great detail.
Thanks

hey Kash, have you had any personal experience with prosper? How are they like? From the site address I can only find that they offer loans. But I guess this site offers great advices to people to stay out of shady loan businesses. Would you recommend prosper??

And whoknows, why don't you google the name yourself and see the results? Tx

I tried to get a loan from them, sometime back. I joined one of the 'groups' that the site recommended. I was THEN e-mailed a 'confirmation' e-mail. THEN I was asked to send $125.00 for a " possible loan barrower". As soon as I was asked that, I cancelled my application. If there is a 'lender' who is asking money to GET a loan, that's illegal. I e-mailed the 'MOD' of the site, about this issue. I received no response, up to this point.

Sd, I have nvere heard of that at all. All I have heard is great things about Prosper. That is interesting. Prosper is very legal and has been helping people for a very long time. It is not a loan company. It is a group of private people willing to lend money based on certain criteria.

Maybe Prosper has worked for other people. I was asked to send the 'fee' through MoneyGram. I never did. Obviously..I had a 'negative' experience with them.

MMMmm......maybe it WAS a scammer. I've known a few people, who have applied for, and recevied loans through Prosper. That's why I thought it was a bit strange when I was asked to pay a 'fee'. But, as I said, that was my only time I applied with Prosper.

I have 2 current loans with Prosper, and have never had a problem.

All I can say about "fees" is that I once heard that if you fell into the lowest/poorest credit score bracket that was allowable to borrow on Prosper, you had to pay a small up-front fee because you were a high risk to it's community of lenders.

I just signed up with Prosper a couple of days ago...

To be honest, I initially checked them out because I had heard that there is a way to check your credit score/report yourself without paying for a view beyond your "one annual freebie" - AND without showing an inquiry on your credit report...

When I got to the site and started poking around, I was pretty impressed with their site and system.
Their reputation seems good, and their "fine print" was not scary or evil-sounding...
...And the whole idea of cutting "banks" out of the equation, and dealing directly with other folks, REALLY appeals to me...

I have found no fees associated with anything that I have done on the site, thus far.
( I DID begin a loan request, but have not posted it for consideration, yet...)

I have visited the forums and groups, and did the "trick" of viewing my current Equifax report while I was there....

( NOTE: Equifax is reporting a MORTGAGE APPLICATION on there THAT I DID NOT MAKE!
I am figuring that this is an "error" which I must get corrected - but the thought of SOMEONE ELSE trying to borrow against my property IS a new brain-cramp...
.....Point of this note being: CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORTS, Boys and Girls!! )

I had the opportunity to call Prosper support with a question.
(Yes, they have a toll-free phone number, right on the site!)
I was IMMEDIATELY connected with a real, live, human being.
The human being actually ANSWERED my question.
Nicely.

I have already recommended to a couple of friends that they should at least check out the site, as I could see how it might be useful to them....

(Of course, as with anything, always gather all of the information you possibly can then make your own decisions before committing to ANYTHING...)

I'll update you when I've had more experience with them, if anyone is interested...

i've heard nothing but good things about them. i checked them out and they do seem very legit and respectable. sadly, my credit score was too low to take a loan but even that's respectable for me because they don't loan if they don't think someone could pay it back (I actually could have at the time, but that's how it is with bad credit!)

Just wanted to offer everyone an update on my Prosper comments...

As I mentioned before, I initially visited Prosper as I had read that you can get a "free peek" at your credit report when you sign up.

I DID get a free look at the credit report that they pulled, and I did so WITHOUT COMPLETING the loan-request process.

My next credit report showed a "soft inquiry" from Prosper.

I suspect that if I had COMPLETED the loan request, it would have created a "hard inquiry".

SO, if you have used-up your free annual report access, and
can't or don't want to pay for a newer copy, you CAN see ONE of your reports by registering and STARTING a loan application, but never finalizing it.
(Of course, you CAN finalize the loan application, if that's what you want to do, but if you apply for something you'll be unable to get, you'll simply end up with another hard inquiry on your report. I'm not sure if they send you a "denial" letter that you could then use to request a current copy of the report they pulled, or not, since you are dealing with individuals... Either way, you would end up with another hard inquiry for completing the loan request...)

Hope this info is useful to someone - notyour

Luke, you're right - there ARE less elaborate ways to see your credit report...

...guess I should have been clearer about my intentions in posting that info...

reason #1:

When I first heard about doing that (the Prosper "see-your-credit-report" trick), it was stated that "it wouldn't show up AT ALL on my credit report" - which sort of amounts to a half-truth...

My little "test" of the "trick" showed a soft inquiry - so, it's not being shown-around, but, based on what I had read, I was surprised to see "Prosper" on my next credit report at all....

So - I was just trying to clarify that point, (in my experience) since I got the info that it "wouldn't show up at all" from a popular website, and I felt a bit misinformed when I saw Prosper in big bold letters on my report (fortunately as a soft inquiry, but it was "good for a rush", till I read more closely...lol)

reason #2:

In going through posts by others, I have seen information requests from folks who want to see their credit reports, but can't afford to pay for the privilege, right then...

IF someone has a little more time & patience than cash, it CAN be a mechanism for getting more-of-a-clue-than-absolutely- none, when it comes to what others (like potential creditors) will be seeing about them....

...I'd suggest thinking of it as a kind of a "break glass in case of emergency" resource...

...but Luke is right - as soon as you can afford to, I would recommend finding a less elaborate ritual for checking your report...

I tried using this mechanism once (both to immediately see my report, and to see if "the trick" worked), but I didn't repeat the process, as I felt that doing so regularly would be taking advantage of Prosper's bandwidth & resources....

As always, MANY THANKS to everyone for all of the information they share here!

THANK YOU, Luke...

I HAVE joined you fine folks...and I'm delighted to be here!

I apparently have some previously unknown innate skill, wherein I somehow get signed-out when I submit a post....

This IS my first experience with a forum, so I suspect it's "operator error"...

...maybe this one will keep me signed-in... if not, I'm: "notyour"

( ...if there's a way to change your screen name from the stock "part of the email address that you registered with", I'm apparently too "forum challenged" to have figured that out, too... LOL)

Thanks to everyone for all of the guidance!

Notyour - You aren't forum challenged :D

You have to have Admin change your username. It's not something you can do on your own.

Look at the top right hand part of your screen. There should be a link saying "Private Message". Click on that, then the "New Post" button. For the username, send to "Jason" (no quotes). He is an Admin here, just put in the message that you want to change your username to whatever, and he will take care of it for you!

Thanks, Luke...

I actually think that "Daria" might have been written by some poor soul who went to school with me....

Fortunately, nearly thirty years of living in the woods of West Virginia have made me somewhat more "normal"...

Your signature line states an unfortunately undeniable fact - thanks for keeping us reminded...

Yes - THANKS, goudah2424!

I feel slightly less dense, knowing that I'm not SUPPOSED to be able to do it myself...

I appreciate the opinion that I may not be forum challenged, too - although THAT obviously remains to be proven...lol.

Your "How I make some extra cash" is interesting - it's nice to hear a comment from someone who's actually involved.
(You mean I won't make a million dollars by Thursday, without doing anything, and using only a product that the promoter has never actually seen or used?? geeez...)

One thing about Prosper is you have to write your loan request so that it is appealling to the people who want to lend you money. There is a forum link up there that kind of gives you advice from other potential borrower and some lenders visit the forum and tell you what they are looking for. You have to do a lot of reading to get the information, but is a very good site by far.
If you don't get a loan the first time, you may have to repost to get the attention you are looking for, plus you ad only stays out there for several days.

I was curious if anyone who has a loan through Prosper has asked for the monthly payment to be delayed a few days. I currently have a loan with them and because things are extra tight this week, I have asked to have my payment deducted about 4 days later than normal. I haven't received a response back and was curious if anyone else had asked for something like this.
