I recently checked my credit report and found a $250.00 medical bill from the year 2003. I never received notice from this medical facility and was never notified that it has been turned over to a collections agency. The horrible thing about this is that I indeed have medical coverage. I now no longer have the same medical insurance company and afraid they will not assist me in this matter. I also believe that the medical facility should have never performed a procedure without checking with my insurance carrier or advising me of the amount of the procedure should I not be covered. What would you suggest, just paying the bill; ask the credit bureau to investigate; or what?

I work for a major insuance company in il. If i were you i would contact the insurance carrier that you had during that time of service. Who knows maybe its a provider write-off, coinsurance amount, amount not covered. It could be a number of things. You first thing you need to do is find out if the bill was ever filed to your insurance company.

tmorris, First contact you old insurance carrier
in writing as well as by phone. If you can type this letter and save it on your computer, so you can use this same letter to update it, and use as a follow-up. Contact the carrier explain the situation and ask them what can you do or who could you contact to dispute a medical procedure. If you have recvd a statement from the collection agcy there should be clause that you can dispute this. Get on line and see if the state where you live has a state board of insurance and see if you can file a complaint. You're going to have to be persistant and it probably going to take a while. Contact the credit
bureau and ask them also what you can do. All information you can gather takes names, #'s and dates
as your follow-up.. Good luck

My friend, I truly empathize with your plight ! Hence its advisable that you immediately inform the credit bureau about it...but be sure its not in your hands to get things investigated by them. The credit bureau has your entire credit profile and monitors your credit score from time to time...hence if required they would surely do the needful at their own free will !
Its for your benefits that you need to get the updates from your former insurer...and ask for their cooperation incase it had been a fault at their side.

But theres absolute no doubt about the fact that unless you're gonna meet the bill your credit status is not gonna improve.
so get faster...and consult your nearest attorney !
regards, Misty
