I recently received my credit report to find i owe money to Jefferson Capital. I called the number on the report but it said it had been disconnected. The account is still open. How do i pay them debt if i cant talk to them?

Hi wah_on

It is nice to hear from you once again. Going through your post, I feel like asking you to make sure if you still have this debt on with Jefferson Capital. If that being so, then you can think about consolidating it by making less monthly payments with lower interest rates according to this program. That will be easier for you as it won't put much strain in your daily life. May I ask you the amount of your debt, so that you can choose the best program suitable to your needs and requisites?

Hi wah_on
Good to have you with us in the forums

Since you are aware from your credit report, that you owe money to Jefferson Capital, you should search the company website to find out their address and contact number other than you know.

So please go ahead and contact them. Otherwise your account may be a late payment one or it may be charged off which can lower your credit score.

Hope this information will help you

Hi Guest,

Welcome to the forums. Your post says that your account is sold to Jefferson Capital, a collection agency. I will explain you here, how this process works.

The amount with your creditors is recorded as account receivable in the books of their company and is counted as an asset. When a credit card company is unable to collect the debt from you and thus stops all the collection efforts, it charges off the debt. Hence, it further allocated the debt to some collection agency that either works to collect the debt on behalf of the creditors or purchases the debt.

Now the collection agency after purchasing the debt, tries to recover the debt from the debtor. He will be calling the debtor asking for money and the original creditor will have no relation to this debt when it is sold to the collection agency. If the collection agency is working for the creditors, then they get a proportion of the debt as their share of profit.

You are required to pay this debt as it will be evaluated to judge your credit worthiness.

Your credit report will show the status of the original creditor as charged off. Also, subsequent collection accounts for the debt will be added to your credit history.

Since you have defaulted in your payments at regular intervals, your account will be added with financial charges and late fees which will increase the total amount of your debt.

The account in collections will remain in your credit file for 7 years from the date of original delinquency of the account. You are required to pay this debt in order to obtain new credit.

Regards
Roxette

Hi hanshda

Welcome to the forums.

Have you contacted Jefferson Capital at the numbers listed at the top of this page?

It will be helpful to you if you contact at the customer care cell of Jefferson Capital and seek information about your accounts.

Also, you can pull your latest credit report from the three bureaus and see the status of the said account. Hopefully, your creditors might have updated your accounts.

Regards
Roxette

Each state has a statute of limitations for collecting credit card debt (in NC, for example, there is a 3 year statute of limitations...it starts from the date of the first missed payment and ends 3 years later). Even if you actually owed the money, if the statute of limitations has run out, no one can collect the money. If a collection agency tries to collect the debt after the statute of limitations has run out, all one has to do is inform them of this fact. If they continue to call/write about it, you can report them to http://www.ftc.gov as well as your state's Attorney General's Office. If you make a payment of even one penny, the statute of limitations "clock" starts ticking all over again. I know because I have checked with the FTC.

While cleaning up credit report. Saw a balance still due on a creditor. Checked my records and saw that acct paid in full thru Jeff Cap. If they don't answer phones how will my dispute thru Experian ever get answered or resolved? Thanks

Experian and the other two credit bureaus are responsible to present the actual picture of the consumers' credit in the file. This is according to the federal laws mentioned in the FCRA. If they don't correct the information with the companies after your dispute is found to be correct, you have a legal case against the bureau reporting incorrect credit history. Mark the item in error and dispute it in writing with the bureaus. They will have to fix up the errors and give you an updated copy. Send your letter through certified mail.

I never had account with fungerhut who reported me to Jefferson Capital.I called them about this before. They took off my experian report, but it is still on my equifax report. I called the same number I did the last time, now no one knows nothing. All I'm getting is that must be the old fingerhut and I don't have the number. This is a mess. I never had anything from them in the first place. The month and year they gave me and the address they gave me.I was living with my mom at the time and our house burnt down, so why would I need a stereo, when I had no place to put it.I was living with a neighbor who had a stereo.Even if I didn't burn down I already had a new stereo I bought from Wal-Mart what would I do with two.I just need the taken care of so this can get off all my credit reports. I think they don't want to be contacted if you ask me.I already called like 4 different numbers no help at all.

Satute of Limitations - the period of time when the debt enforced through the courts. This varies between 3 and 6 years depending on the state. Once this date is passed the debt is still due but the debtee can't use the courts to collect it. Basically they can ask but they can't use the courts to collect anything. They are essentially without teeth.

Most companies understand this and the debt is written off if the sol is passed. Jefferson generally only buys debts that are past the statute of limitation. They try to convince people who may be the debtor to reaffirm the debt to start the sol clock over. They are legally not allowed to reset the date themselves or to threaten legal action. Jefferson does both.

The key is, no matter how tempting, do not pay them money or sign anything they send you. Dispute the debt with them and with the credit bureaus. Send them a cease and desist letter on phone contact. They are completely geared to trying to convince people that legally uncollectable debts are collectible.

Don't feel sorry for Jefferson, that thousand dollar debt may have cost them ten bucks. If you want to assuage your conscience give the money you owe to a reputable charity, then it will actually do some good.

They bought a debt of mine from a creditor which is already 7 years old and on my credit report under this Jefferson Capital debt it states that this account was opened on 03/19/2009! This debt is already ancient! Good luck collecting this one JC!

A Google search will show you many references to them, including their web site, and also this wonderful lawsuit filed against them by the FTC.

Do not call them. Write them a letter Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested. Send them the copy and tell them to Cease & Desist contacting you ever again or you shall be forced to take legal action against them. Check your credit reports (www.annualcreditreport.com for all 3) and if they are updated on there (it SHOULD show the account as being Paid Colelctions and the date you paid), send a copy of that payment to the credit reporting agency requesting them to update the report immediately to reflect the correct information..

Roxette...your information is incorrect..the Jefferson Capital you list is a private equity firm in Richmond Virginia...it has nothing to do with credit or collections...the firm you need to refer people to is Jefferson capital systems...it's number is 800-928-6614...you have done my firm (Jefferson Capital Partners ) a real disservice as now all of these poor people looking to contact the collection agency contact us instead...pls. retract your post..regards.

Sorry about the mixup. I have removed your information from the post at the top of the page. If you find your information in another post on our site, please don't hesitate to message me, report the problem to another moderator, or contact site admin. - Uncle Wulf

I have just been informed by My Mom that a Collector from "Jefferson Capital" has been contacting her advising her to confirm her Last 4 of her Social Security to verify they have the correct person. My Mom refused to confirm her SS#...Jefferson Capital asked if they were speaking with (Me) because they allegedly have been trying to contact me ( I have not been contacted phone# no listed) they allegedly then asked my Mom for my phone number. My Mom refused! I have as of yet called Jefferson Capitial to inquire what this is regarding. However, have noticed a "Pending Lawsuit" of Jefferson Capital .....I went to the link and noticed it is for "Aspire Credit Card" I did have this Card and experienced the same practices as stated in this "Lawsuit" Now they are calling relatives and this debt is already on my Credit Report. What do I do? Can I be included on this Lawsuit?

I am correcting my above statement. My Relatives have been contacted by Jefferson Capital Collections and not Jefferson Capital LLC.
Sorry, for this misunderstanding and do not wish harm on Jefferson Capital LLC
