help03, first I have to ask, Is the account in YOUR name? This is what you have to do. Or rather, your family member has to do. They have to get a copy of their credit report and dispute it being on there. If its on all three bureaus, then it has to be disputed with all three. This can be done and it HAS been done. I DID IT!!! I have a couple of accounts that are mine and in my name only but husband is joint-or so the credit bureaus have him as being joint. I helped him dispute them. He never used him, he was allowed to as he was joint, but he never did. The accounts were in my name only and the statement that came to the house was to me. We were able to dispute by saying that they were mine and NOT his.
I have a sams club card that went into charge off. I was making payments but lawyers still blind sided me and took me to court--long story short. They put a judgement on my report. I checked husbands credit report, they had it listed on his because he was joint. We disputed and had it removed. I also had a gas card that he was joint on and never used, it was on his report and we had it removed. We argued that it was MY account NOT his and he had never used it.
It takes a little patience but it can be done if you're willing to do the work. I think on one account, it took a couple of disputes to get it taken off. But we got all of my accounts taken off of his report. hope this helped, as this is something I went through and done personally. shirley
Joint account
Thanks for the info. I will give that a try and tell them to dispute it with the credit bureaus.

Joint account
Hello,
I want to make sure that if my family member does this with the bureaus that they don't think the account was used fraudulently. We both are on the account. Is that the same situation you had?
Joint account or Authorized user
Shirley,
Was you situation a joint account with both of your social security numbers used OR was he just an authorized user on the account?

My husband was just an authorized user but credit bureaus had the accounts listed as 'joint accounts'. Have you thought of calling up the creditor and asking them to take family members name off and leave it under your name only? I don't know if they would do this, but its a thought. I mean, being the family member never used it--not sure though being both of you went into this account together. Is it under both of your names? I mean, like when the statement comes, does it show the both of you?
Account
Hello,
I have asked the creditor before to remove her name, however, I would have to be able to take on the credit limit and balance and due to my credit history not being favorable this is not an option. The statement comes to me at my mailing address and has her name listed on it also. They tell me that it would be as if I were applying for a credit card on my own and then doing a balance transfer.

Generally if one of the account owners agrees to take up the responsibility, creditors remove the other name. A similar story was posted in forums where the ex-husband accepted the responsibility and the girl was freed from it.
I'm not sure if the credit worthiness matters here or not. Since it is a joint account, I think it will appear in both of your credit reports, until you remove the other name from the account. So try to convince your card issuer that you can accept this liability, hence the other one should be relieved from it.

IMO, it will be verified as correct since both of you own the account. However, you can call credit bureaus to know what you can do in such cases. Keep us posted.

Credit fix
Stanley,
I went ahead and wrote a letter to the creditor where I had a joint account with my mother to request that they remove her from responsibility and they messed it up and removed my name from responsibility and left her name on the account. Should I attempt to fix this or leave it alone as it was a pretty high balance credit card and now we have paid it off in full. Would it help my FICO score to have a high balance credit card listed on my credit bureau that shows paid in full OR should I just leave it alone and not attempt to get my information listed on the credit bureaus again? They really messed up this one on the reporting.

I think you should fix it up with the bureaus because it is not giving out the actual status. You never know the consequences that may arise because of this wrong entry.
