What does Key Derogatory mean on a credit report?

Hi Smith
Key derogatory is nothing but negative information which can hurt your credit score. Know how to remove negative information from credit report.

Derogatory or negative information often hurts the credit file. For example, if a creditor is reporting your account as 30 days late on payment, it is hurting your credit file negatively. Besides, the late payment information arranged in sequence like 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 days late, loan default, collections; charge-offs; judgments and foreclosures are also bad.
If a particular account is marked as key derogatory information in your file, you have to take steps in improving your file. Pay off the account and the file will start improving steadily.

Bill, you can request an explanation from the bureau about the present status of key derogatory. I don't think it makes any difference because it was negative before disputing the item. Anyway, you can get the status clarified with the bureau in writing. Do let me know when you get a response from them.

Smith, I have searched a lot on what does the term Key Derogatory mean but landed nowhere. I think, they put this status on the accounts that are being disputed by the consumer. Not sure...just my thoughts.

Hi

Did you pay the balance amount to the CA and were they authorized for the collections? If so, the CA must update your file with "paid collection".

You should highlight this item and place it on dispute with the bureau. They will make the changes and send you a free copy within 30 days.

i have a Key Derogatory on my account for almost 2 years now, and i have no idea who the bill was from! i was never notified, and my credit score is really bad. if i pay this off, will the Key Derogatory fall off my credit report? or am i going to have bad credit forever?

Aileen,

If you don't know what the bill is from then DISPUTE it. The collection agency MUST provide debt validation. The credit reporting agency will investigate it and if it's founded as unfounded they will delete it for you.

If not then you can get the address of the collection agency and send a debt validation letter which they must respond to. If they do not then they can not collect the debt... and must remove it from your credit history.

I'm currently in the process of repairing my credit after many mistakes in my youth. I have 2 key derogatories on my experian file but my equifax and transunion are reflecting my status more clearly. These are debts which have been paid off for over 2 years now. Is there a way I can still dispute this?

RogueAngyl , is the account "paid in full" updated in your credit file with Experian? Negative information or key derogatory cannot be taken off before the seven years period but it should be reflect the latest standing also.

Yeah, this Key Derogatory stuff is weird....I've got a few of them appearing on accounts that were charge-offs, but they have been paid for years! How do I get the KD designation removed? Also, I just paid a collection account off....and NOW they are reflecting Key Derogatory on it! It wasn't showing KD before I paid it...what is up with that?

Yes, unfotunately they are paid off so I guess there is not much I can do in most regards. One of the KDs I have is on a collection account showing no history after it was transfered to them, I paid it off immediately if I remember correctly (this is going back some ways), and the only 2 year history it's showing is that it was key derogatory when they received it. ?????

If you file a dispute on something on your credit report and the ca does not respond, does the derogatory remark get removed? What does the credit reporting agency consider proper debt validation? I am trying to get it myself on an account, they sent me junk, but it in now way is proper debt validation to me, I would not want the credit reporting agency accepting this either on my report, any body know?

So what exactly is the solution to the KD items on the credit report? I know I messed up, and I would like to start repairing my credit. But, there is one account that has been closed since about 2000--and it was a charge-off. Is that permanently going to stay that way? How long do KD items stay on your report?

If a claim has been paid off in 2002 and I file a dispute NOW to reflect a change in the account status that it has been paid and satisfied.....EXPERIAN, shows 'paid/satisfied' but put KD on the current month that I filed the dispute. I disputed the KD and they tell me it is a 'claim, paid in full'. This contradicts their own defination of a CLAIM- request of demand for payment. How can it be a KD 'Claim' if there is NOTHING TO REQUEST OR DEMAND???????? I have disputed til I am blue in the face, I quit, it keeps placing the KD on the current month I dispute.....Suggestions?

EXPERIAN IS DOING THIS TO ME AS WELL!
Due to financial hardships and the housing bust we avoided forclosure by aggreeing to a short-sale.
We felt good about ourselves... Plus the loan was an FHA insured which meant that Countrywide WAS PAID in FULL!
All other reporting agencies are just listing as Paid/Settled/0 balance but EXPERIAN listed the FHA short sale as KD which is the same as FORECLOSURE in Experians terms because Countrywide mortgage left remarks on my credit report stateing "Yes - Leagally Paid but short of the full balance"

Because of that not totally correct Statement from CountryWide, our Score dropped 20 points and Experian is the only agency placing a KD or equivalent of FORCLOSURE on my report!

Thats just WRONG! How can the consumer benefit from economic stimulous if one of the Credit Agencies makes us look like American Peasants! Basically telling us to "Let'em Eat Cake!"

Several months ago someone posted a site called masteringmydebt.com. I found the information very useful.

They also have these financial calculators that show you how to get out of debt.

Hi,

I filled Bankruptcy back in 2003. My credit report shows KD for most of those accounts. I was never late prior to the filing, so is it true they have to update and not report negative? Most of the other accounts state ND, so I assume this is something that can be corrected. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Nikki

It is Key Derogatory and No Data. I understand the chapters can remain on your credit or 7-10 years, but what I don't understand is how they can report KD on the creditors I filled against. I was under the impression that no data was to be reported, so I didn't think they would mark the accounts as derogatory.

Thanks,
Nikki

If it was included in the BK, then the account will show on your credit report as "Included in BK" which is derogatory. If it was not included, then it should not have any such notation.

Even tho you were current and never late with them prior to the BK, once you file BK and included them in the BK, those accounts are now reporting correctly as a negative/derog mark.

I lost my job in april so I called and cancelled my account with american express. so they put in this program where you can pay your balance and it doesn't effect your credit at all. they also mentioned that if i dont make payment on 16 of every month, i will be kicked out from this program and it will be sent to credit bureau.I have been making payment son time for 8 months and i have a proof. but its effecting my credit because they kicked me out from this program cuz they think i was late 2 months. I told them that i have a proof but they are denying it and its on my credit now.what should i do.I have called them more then 100 times, talked to the managers, supervisor and they are not willing to help me out.

I have a couple of AMEX accounts marked as "derogatory status" and "charge-off". I spoke with credit bureau dept from AMEX and they told me that even though I have just finished paying for these in full, the KD status will remain until the 7 year period is over BUT it will show as "charge-off paid in full" which would be not such a bad sign for creditors to give loans and such until this time frame is due... hope that helps!

I have an account on my Experian report that shows as "Key Derogatory". The account is in collections and I have a payment plan worked out with the collection agency. I have been making regular payments on the account for over a year, but the Original account is showing "closed potentially negative". what can i do to have the account reflect that i am making payments and how long will the key derogarory stay on my credit report? the account has been closed for years.

I got a KD note in my credit score because we had been scam of one of company. we fill lawsuit , and we almost settle.
My lawyer said the defendant will send note to credit bureau to fix my credit report, and it will come with a note.
Do you know what that's mean. And should my KD note can be disappear, because it was not my mistakes. And the defendant commit what they did. (-because they settle with us -)
Do you have any idea what should I ask from them ?

Thank you

KD is placed on the account by the creditor not the credit reporting agency. KD and closed affect your report both negatively. An account that is closed and in KD status cannot change until the amount is paid in full. Then the account gets opened and is reported Paid On Time, In Full etc.... if you have an account in KD status pay it off asap.
Any government loan that is past due and not paid off immediately will reflect "Closed" "Potentially Negative" and KD status. Closed means it is reporting negatively, potentially negative is warning Loan agencies and KD means it should have been paid off in full at the time the loan criteria wasn't met anymore. It will report KD until the time it is paid off.
