I am on disability and have been on for 5 years  . I was diagnosed with MS since 2003 and in 2005 I had an exhaerbation (sp?) and went on disability in 2005  . It was at that time that I switched my medication to Rebif which has helped me tremendously with this disease and as of the last MRI last year there is no active lesions being present on my brain and I feel back to normal  .

I would like to go back to work full-time with what I enjoyed which was in the corrections field. There is a job opening for a staff assistant II in parole administration I want to apply for, but this is where the questions starts  :

1. Both times when I told my previous employer (which happened to be for the state that I live in)that I had MS they fired me for "poor work performance" and the only reason I divulged this information because I had a dr's appointment and needed time off. and was willing to work to make up the 2 hours that I would miss. I had been a state employee of 7 years, (and was even Employee of the Year in 1999 with a ceremony with the Governor along with other state recognized employees) so I had plenty of time built up but didn't want to use it.

2. The problem is when you quit your job with the state (which I originally quit in November 2002 because I wanted to finish my college education) and they give you 5 years to come back and have your vacation and sick leave time reinstated you go back on original probabation of 6 months  . It is during that 6 month period that they can fire you without any real concrete proof of anything  and the labor union will not step in to help until you become a permanent employee.

3. How do I go about explaining my short working history for the two jobs that I had the first one being 30 days until I told them I was diagnosed with MS and fired me the day after my birthday and the day that I offically found out I had MS  . The 2nd job I was there for 3 months and when I told my supervisor I needed time off for a doctor's visit because I was in a medical study for MS they fired me the next week stating the same "poor work perfomance" issues  .

4. How do I explain what I have been doing for the past 3 years? I have to fill out a new application by the 9th of this month and am at a loss on what to put in for the reason for leaving. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am only 42 years old and can't survive on the measley $1,000.00 I get for disability benefits and want to be a productive member of society and work.

How have you survived all that time? I would say that you worked from home at your own business and hope they would not try to dig into it too deeply! My wife has worked from home for a few years and when she applied for a job on the outside again they did not question it. It is very common today! You could not have survived doing nothing!

Well actually frog my husband is a contractor I could tell them that I worked for him but what do I tell them for the reason for wanting to come back to work. He actually got a job with the state dept. of roads 2 years ago because of needing health insurance and construction slowing to a screeching halt, but they wouldn't need to know that I guess.

lady I truly feel for ya..
I have a very close friend who has been diagnosed with M.S. since the 80's when I and family met him and his family..
throughout the years it has been feast or famine for him..he has had several jobs with the state and now has believe it or not a jumping out of airplane..parachute instructor business.. :D
lady I'm thinking you will be judged on work performance BEFORE you were diagnosed with the disease...if your performance was okay..you will be able to find employment but I think your problem is because you voluntarily quit to finish your education..many people in my state are able to keep their jobs and finish their education at the same time..I am sorry you could not accomplish this and wish you the best in your illness!

Thank you so much for your advice, unfortunately I did quit my job and boy do I regret that. I thought by getting my degree that was going to open up alot of opportunities, unfortunately at that same time is when I became extremely sick. People don't understand MS because it mimicks so many other things and I think people attach a stigma to it, (kind of like the plaque). I have lost a few friends over this since I was diagnosed but if they were truly my friends they would have tried to help me cope with it instead of just brushing me off.

Well we will see what happens I submitted my application and took the typing test on Friday so I can only hope for the best.

I refuse to let this disease bring me down and will go fighting till the end.

I admire your spirit and courage and wish you the best of luck! My wifes mother had to fight that battle when my wife was very young as did my aunt. There was little that could be done back then but thanks to modern medicine the odds have shifted greatly. Your spirit and my prayers will win!!
