Perhaps you can contact the lawyer that filed the suit for the company and make some sort of payment arrangements with them. Are you saying you had a line of credit and defaulted so that is why your wages are being garnished?

There aren't too many illegal garnishments, contrary to what people may think. Your HR dept or payroll dept receives official documents before beginning deductions. Since the garnishment has already begun, there isn't a lot you CAN do. 25% for consumer debts is legal in every state except for The carolinas, Texas, and Pennsylvania, where consumer garnishments are not allowed. I am surprised by the lien, though- it must've been a significant debt, or you have some really aggressive collectors. At this point, basically all you can do is contact your court and attempt to prove that you can't afford the max of 25%. You may be able to get it reduced. I wouldn't expect to get it stopped, though. I have been an HR rep for more than 7 yrs and have never seen a garnishment stopped except for with a bankruptcy. Good luck.
