I just received a letter from an attorney's office attempting to collect a medical debt from 9/8/98. I live in the state of Florida and that is where the debt occurred (hospital). Can this attorney legally collect this debt? Thanks for any help.

Carol, this debt might be out of the statutes of limitations. Please check it in your latest credit report and see the date of last activity on this account.

If it is, the attorney cannot force you to pay on it. Though he might be willing to take legal actions, but you can dishonor the promise.
