I am new to this community and need basic 101 help. I have recently decided to leave my debt settlement company I hired and they have yet done any settlements for me. I have decided to try to do this myself. I am sure they know the people to talk to yet then on top of that debt I have to pay them 15% so there's another few thousand dollars. I have looked at some of the threads and trying to patch this information along with that together. Where do I begin. I have not made a payment since last Oct. to all of them. The debt settlement company said I have to age them by 6 months...well that will be in March. I have seen some of the sample letters but I haven't seen one that starts it all as in I am willing to settle this account and this is how much I can give you. Also what I need is who in the world do I send it to the hardship dept. or another dept and to who's attention.
Can you tell me has anyone been successful at settling debts themselves?

Thanks
janice

Janice, there are many in this community who have settled their debts themselves. You can read some of their success stories for encouragement.

IMO to begin with, you need to make a call to the creditor and speak to the customer care reps. Let them know that you're willing to settle. Sometimes the creditor too can come up with a settlement offer when the account is sufficiently old.

Check out the 'do it yourself'.

I too am starting debt settlement. Have three cards owned by B of A. Just started receiving calls after missing December payment. They insist I work out a payment plan and I just keep saying no, I can only offer a settlement. I too was told I had to wait six months. What I find perplexing is different states and different people calling about my Visa as if I didn't tell them the day before......it is the largest balance by far.
