Question-of-the-Week (QOW) Promotion Strategy
Date: Wed, 07/30/2008 - 03:56
I want to discuss as well as need suggestion on Question-of-the-Week (QOW).
For the last couple of months we have started a new section called "Question-of-the-Week" (QOW). We are getting some very good answers every week. But we want more participation of our members in this section. According to me, one of the possible reasons for such low turn-out in the "Question-of-the Week" section is lack of information among our members about this section and the Reward of $50 associated with it.
We need your suggestion to promote this new section of our site – Question-of-the-Week (QOW).

NOTE: - I have also seen that all the Moderators are also not participating. We also expect the “Half-of-Fame†members and the Debt Samaritans to participate in the Question-of-the-Week section on a regular basis. We consider you all our prized assets who have made it possible for Debtcc to scale new heights.

I think part of the problem is the way the contest is done. There is not much trust in the process, or the voting. People don't understand why they should vote when their vote may not matter.

I have participated in all of them, except the last one. And the only reason I didn't was, I was planning on answering it, and by the time I did, it was up for voting, leave it me to be late
Maybe occasionly you could make an announcemt that we have this contest and it is every week, etc. That way, the new ones will know what we are doing and talking about, also those who come back to the forums, just a thought. Maybe some of the new ones see it off to the side, but aren't sure what it is, or what to do with it..karen

I have a suggestion...
Everyone of us have some close friends in this forum. We can contact them on an individual level and inform them about the QOW section by giving url of the same. We can also motivate them for answering QOW by informing them about the $50 Winner Prize.
Karen's proposal sounds good to me. Information gap may be a reason for which people don't come to know about the answering period and the voting period. So, a periodic notification regarding this may work out positively for Question-of-the-Week.
Goudah's point is very serious but is not clear why she thinks so.

It's not clear why I think so? I find that very funny coming from you Jason . . . .
Most of the members know that Admin ultimatly choses the winner, and that their votes count for very little in the process. It doesn't exactly encourage any trust. It's stupid to have a vote when the votes matter very little, if at all.
I think you would have a better turn out if you made it a more democratic process, where the answer with the most votes actually wins. Maybe do 2 winners, popular vote and Admin's choice.
When people have little trust in the process, the $50 prize means little to them. I think Admin should only be stepping in when there is a clear need for it, not just arbitrarily chosing the winner each time.
It's also hard to take a contest seriously when half the time the "winning" answer is not so good . . . . . I think that most of the time the better, more thought out answers are overlooked, while some oddball answer that could only apply to a very small percentage of people wins. It makes no sense. There are a ton of very knowledgable people on this site, but when they see that some strange answer wins over a bunch of very intelligent answers, it makes it very hard to trust in the process. Like the boob job answer that one time - So many guys voted for it because it was for a boob job. People aren't voting for the best, most informative answer, they are voting using other reasons.
Frankly, I think if any financial professional looked at those answers that have won (for the most part) they would think this was a not so professional site.

Gee, maybe put a link to the question on the main home page? I guess I haven't been entering because that first experience left a bad taste in my mouth--but I will participate more in the future.

Admin doesn't intervene until and unless it becomes extremely necessary. We intervened in selecting the winner of Question-of-the-Week in two instances: -
1. The first QOW
2. QOW where the boobs answer popped up to the No.1 position
In all the QOWs except for the above mentioned ones, voting was the only factor behind choosing the winner. We didn????????t intervene in these cases because it didn????????t seem to us to be absolutely necessary. We don????????t like to intervene in a democratic process until and unless it becomes a necessity.
We value democracy to the ultimate level and Admin is there to maintain peace, sanctity and quality of our forum (just like the "Welfare State").

Two winners of the same contest don????????t look good. In a competition only one person wins.
In fact, choosing another answer of our choice will only reflect Autocratic tendencies of the Admin, which is also not healthy for our free and democratic forum.
Admin intervenes only when voting causes depletion of quality of the QOW section.

I think the real issue should be how should we move forward from this point. The past is water under the bridge. How can we make it better?
