How to split a thread
Date: Mon, 11/02/2009 - 03:39
I got a PM this morning from another mod, asking how to split selected posts off from a thread. In the interest of spreading the knowledge around (and because I'm too lazy to type it more than once), here's how to go about it. Is pretty simple, really.
First, select the posts you want to split off from that thread. You manage that by checking the checkbox in the top/right corner of each post you want to split off. Selected posts will turn yellow.
Then drop down to the bottom of the last page of the thread. Just above the Quick Reply composition box, on the right, you'll see a drop-box labeled 'Moderation.' Next to that is a button labelled 'Go (x)', where x is the number of messages you've selected.
Click in the drop-box, and select the action you want to take. In this case, that would be 'Move Posts.'
Then click the 'Go (x)' button.
That will take you to a screen where you can select which forum you want to move the messages into, or which thread you want to attach them to.
If you're just splitting the messages off into a new thread, then select a forum, give your new thread a title, and click 'Move Posts.'
If you're attaching the selected posts to an existing thread, you'll need to specify the URL (not the title) of the thread you want to attach them to. They'll be added to the specified thread in chronological order.
That's all there is to it. Clear as mud, right? :)

Just yankin' your chain to see iff'n you'd jump, Paul. No worries, your reflexes check out just fine.
As to why I tend to write the way I do... I'm an IT consultant. A goodly part of what I do involves technical writing aimed at people who may not have the faintest idea of what I'm talking about. So I tend to spell out procedures in detail.

I'm the one who poked Uncle for it and see what he has done....just gave us a glimpse of his multifaceted character :D
Well explained. In fact I am right now feeling like a fool since you have explained.
Anyway, hope it'd help others too.
