Bally's used my old CC# (lost - new number) but still 8 ODs?

I found out today that Bally Fitness has tried to charge its monthly fee 8 times to a VISA debit card I reported as lost 3 months ago(which has since been replaced with a completely different number). While the VISA debit card is tied to my main bank account, Bally's doesn't have the bank account number or the new VISA account number. In any event, the first attempt came back NSF(I'm starting to use a new bank because of stuff like this!!) so they kept trying. I hadn't added any funds during the entire time so when I next checked my account there were 8 overdrafts from Bally's. My question is, if they don't have my new VISA number, and are simply using the old one that was cancelled, how does that constitute authorization to debit my account? The monthly membership fee is $12.51. Now I owe that and $160 in overdrafts!! Isn't there some law that prohibits such practices? Please help!!

Is your account with Bally Fitness active? If so, they will charge their monthly fees.. right? Although the debit card entered in their records is reported lost, did you update this information with Bally Fitness?
Bally should not have used your new account for charging their monthly fee since it is not entered in their books. But they got it since it is tied with the main bank account. Did I understand right till here?
