I have been looking into consolidating my outstanding debt. I have about 10 to 15 k dollars in debt and i am really tired of debt collectors calling for something i didnt know i had, or just didnt remember. I recently returned from iraq to find that most of the debt i payed off while i was deployed really didnt help me that much. Seems like it just put out the word to other debt collectors that i was settling my accounts. If you could give me some information on consolidation I would appreciate it. I am not really worried about my student loan debt, i have that under control but its the things like the ballys bill that i got when i was 18 or the sprint phone i got when i was 19 that are killing me. Thank you

Hi armed_dog

You mentioned a bill with Bally's Fitness and it is in collections. Is it Asset Acceptance collecting for that account? There are many similar stories about this and most of the accounts are in disputed shape. Read them in this link below.

Before you make a payment, get more details on this account from the collection agency. Check out for the statutes of this debt account in your state. It might be past the SOL period if the last payment was done long ago.

When the collectors call you for making a payment, make sure that you know about their authorization for collecting the debt. They must give you enough proof in writing that confirms that creditors have hired them for the collections. It's mentioned in the fdcpa. Go through this one.
