Well as far as my story goes, Michael Knight of Allen Lewis and Associates had contacted us stating that he was an attorney and that we were in possesion of stolen property and if we didnt pay him $1145 for a $95 violin his client would be pressing charges. As stated in the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act of 1975, I sent a certified letter to his office requesting that all contact cease until such time that legal action was being taken with exception of a verification of the debt to be sent to my home. Several phone calls later from him I informed him that he was in violation of the law and that I have filed complaints with the Florida AG's office ( address below ) and the FTC. Currently Florida is investigating them for falsely representing themselves as lawyers. The phone calls continueto this day. Complaints can be made to the FTC online at: www.ftc.gov; and the Florida Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services at:
Department of Financial Services
Division of Consumer Services
200 E Gaines St
Tallahassee FL 32399-6502

You are doing the right thing. Don't pay a dime before they have validated your account and shown you the correct details. I am surprised on how they have calculated a debt of $95 to $1145. Check the agreement that you signed with the original creditor. You will know the fees when the account is in default.

misguided,

I was contacted by them in December of last year and you are doing the right thing. They are an affiliate or DBA of Bass & Associates. Keep those complaints coming in is all I can on this matter. I'm glad to hear they are under investigation for their illegal tactics. Enough is enough with this type of false threats.

they are definetly in violation of fdcpa.. I was contacted a year ago and told the same thing about possession of stolen property. They did not properly identify themselves either. I told them the instrument was stolen and i had insurance for it but they did not care. I had actually forgotten about it until they had called so i expln'd the situation. They got extremely rude!!I also told them no calls to my poe because I would be in trouble and could be fired, but they continued to do so. I was out on leave so they couldn't get to me, i returned back and calls started up again. I work at a collection agency and they are definetly in violation. I know the laws.. i have filed a complaint and will be sueing. as per the laws not only will the debt be wiped out but they will have to pay $1000.00 to $1500.00 for harassment charges.
