My story

Greetings:

I came here to get some information about a shady collection agency trying to collect on a debt from 2001, and pleasantly discovered that I was far from alone with my woes; and also discovered a wonderful site with intelligent, witty and compassionate people whom I have learned so much from. And would like to try and help others if possible.

I first got into trouble with debt when I was in my early twenties. Spent a very long time paying all that off and was doing fairly well until I met the man I would eventually marry; he pretty much maxed out what few cards I had, 2 cell phones and then proceeded to steal my car (all the while leaving me and our son without a penny). Well, I finally grew a set and left his abusive @ss with my son and now he and our pit bull Woody live in upstate NY and are much happier. I still am dealing with creditors and CAs thanks to the estranged husband (lets not even get into the lack of child support). But thanks to some wonderful people on this website, I have discovered that my income is exempt (I am disabled) and that the Statute of Limitations on that bill is long past... so instead of paying $1,686 (for a $300 phone bill originally mind you) to some pondscum CA, I now (to quote Joe Strummer) "know my rights".

Thanks for welcoming me here, and for being here for people who need you, like myself. You have done wonders for my self-esteem and mental health throughout this.
