I recently lost my job last week. I was employed there for just over a year as an insurance evaluator. The company I worked for had me doing work for another insurance company who was not happy with the way things were going, and the managers got into disagreements. This ultimately ended up getting the contracts pulled. Those accounts were my work, so when they got pulled...I ended up losing my job.

Not only that, but my lease was about to end. I was rushing around town trying to find a place before our time expired. Stress...it was beginning to get the best of me. Then I ended up getting pulled over and was issued a $130 ticket. All this coming down on me at the same time isn't making me happy. Especially since I was planning on starting school in April.

I feel that it's important that people know the importance of having money saved up for situations like these because it could land you somewhere you're not comfortable with. I'm fine in my current situation, but it's the stress that is making me ill.

I'm still jobless, but still searching. Moved back in with mother temporarily, but hope to be back out by the end of the month. I have 1 more paycheck coming to me, but that is money for bills.

I do have a holiday savings account that took out $30 every week and deposited it into a separate account. If i touch that money, the account will close and not reopen till the following November. If I would have done the same into a savings account, I probably wouldn't be so worried right now, and would have a back up plan (or money to fall back on).

Hopefully in a few more years, I'll be able to retire. With the right thinking, and the right planning...nothing is impossible.

Hi Mikey,

It sounds like you have been having a rough time of it, and I am very sorry to hear that. It is very important to have a back up plan, as you said. Keep us updated on how things go for you, and let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

Hi Mikey,

I am sorry to hear about your present situation. You signed the lease with the company, so they should have assured you the security for this time period.

Is there anything that you can do to settle the matter? Or the company should have compensated you in this case?

I can understand the stress in this situation but please do not allow it grip you strongly. Hope that you get a new job very soon.

Regards
Vikas

Sorry to hear about your situation. Would you qualify for unemployment? I would also inquire about possibly applying with some of your contacts from that job but I am sure you have explored all situations.

Two positives here. 1) You can still get a good recomendation from your previous employer since you left on good terms. 2) Its nice to have family that can help you out in hard times.

Yes its great to have savings but thats after the fact.

OK, so a little after 3 months, I have finally found a job. I did do a little temping here and there. Worked for a law office, and even did some more budgeting for the university. Those jobs, however, were only for a day, while the last one only lasted a week.

Although I'm still a contractor, the job I'm being placed on is indefinite. I'm going to be an office manager for a consulting firm. I'm really excited about this, as I've literally had NO MONEY.

I've had great strength during these times, as I've been extremely tempted to get a payday loan, and just let it bounce when it hits my account. Especially during my vacation over the Memorial Day weekend.

Luckily, my roommates have been extremely understanding, and hasn't been on my rear about rent. My mother has been providing the funds for my food, and so it pretty much has balanced out.

Did I forget to mention that I have a few traffic tickets. I'm lucky the judge was understanding, and gave me 90 days to pay. Otherwise I would have lost my license, or even worse...jail time. I had court this morning, and although the 90 days were up, she gave me an additional 30 days. I got the phone call for this job later this afternoon.

I just wanted to thank all who gave me their support during this difficult time. I'm extremely happy that I landed a job in the accounting/budgeting field, and even better...I'm going to manage the front office team, which means a little more money towards any future vacations, or money to put aside for the next emergency.

Regards-
Mike

The tickets I had were back from 2004, which I had though were taken care of, by my father. He hasn't been much helpful, but that's a totally different story. So when I had gotten pulled over for failure to yield on a blinking red, I had received another ticket. I'm definitely working on getting them taken care of, and then for sure...I'll be getting no more tickets. They're just money down the drain.

I got one back in 95 for running a red light while responding to an ambulance call even though I told the officer why I did it and showed him proof that I was an EMT for the service. I ended up paying $250.00 fine for running the stop sign and arguing with the officer and the judge said also that the fine was higher than normal because of knowing the dangers and with the job I have, I had seen what can happen when people do this sort of thing. Needless to say, I stop at all stop signs.

Horray for Mikey! Sounds like things are finally starting to let up. Congrats on your job!I worked with the court system and judges for years, and here in Okla. they will review your fines, and if you have been paying on them and explaind you are trying to catch up after loosing your job, etc.,they will extend your time. I've had clients that have taken 6 months to a year that the judge had extended for them..Good Luck :D ...Karen

Karen

Thank you for your kind words. I use to live in Oklahoma City, so I'm aware of the system out there. I've had many tickets, given the fact that I was driving around in my moms sports car. It gets expensive after awhile, so I just invested in a fazer and a radar detector. I don't actually need them, as I don't usually speed as much as I use to. They have saved me from some close calls, however, from time to time.

Hi Mikey!!!

So glad to hear that you landed a job!!! It is so stressful when you don't have one...you don't know how you will make it from day to day, but it sounds like you managed with temp jobs. Congrats!!!

I just paid a speeding ticket myself...I hate throwing away money like that!! :(

The temp jobs I had were two assignments. One only lasted a day, but I was placed there twice over the course of the 3 month period. The other, only lasted a week. The rest of the time, I was literally broke. Surviving only on payday loans. Kidding! Luckily, my roommates covered my share of the rent, as my mother gave me a ton of food, just about every time I went over to walk the dog.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that I had to pay a tow bill of $244 for parking in my own lot. I was illegally parked, since (A)I didn't have a parking pass, and (B)it wasn't a marked spot. Apparently this building only allows one spot per apartment. It's a sublease, and we were suppose to have been given a parking contract too. That we never received. I'm in the process of file papers on that, as they vandalized my friends car, and wrote in permanent marker on her back windshield. Good ol' mom covered the release of the vehicle, as I was already late picking up my friend at the airport. One problem after another, I swear. My life is really a comedy-drama. I should be on TV.

I suppose, as I stated in this original post, that having a back up plan is greatly needed. Having back up funds for that unknown emergency (that of course will just erk up on you) is important to have. Even if it's just $10 a week, you set aside, will totally save you...when that wicked incident happens to you.

Regards-
Mike
