While an honorable thing to do, the Armed services is not a place to turn to avoid debt, CA's can and will continue to pursue you. In addition they then have additional avenues to pursue you for collections through the military. The only way you get any relief from collections is if your are deployed to an active combat zone. If you enlisted today, the earliest you Could be deployed to qualifying combat zone is about six to eight moths from now, and there is no guarantee you will be deployed to a combat zone. Just because we are at war in Iraq, doesn't mean your going to go there. My nephew was just ordered to deploy to Korea in January. In the mean time they will continue to try and collect from you.
I tried to enlist in the Air Force a few years ago (right after filing bankruptcy)and they wouldn't take me because I was considered a national security risk because I had had money problems (I guess they thought I would sell secrets to who ever asked.. I dunno) The point is they military also runs credit reports and bad credit may keep you from being allowed to enlist. If you don't yet have anything on your credit report then you may have a very small window of opportunity/. If anyone has reported anything, then you may a hard time getting in . It seems to me the military prefers no credit or good credit.
Of course if we were at war and they had a draft all bets would be off..

Hi EmMorgan7
Welcome to the forums.
You have a very good credit rating and you should not let this collection agency hurt your file because of this debt. Your credit report is the most prestigious document and every step should be taken to improve its worthiness. The file can only maintain its worth if you consider paying off your past debt accounts.
Collection entries in the credit report are considered to be a derogatory remark and even though you pay the account, the negative remark won't be removed from your file before 7 years. Make sure that you make the payment arrangements with them before they hit your file negatively.
Tackle the debt collector in the most professional way. Show your concern that you wish to pay this debt and you will be regular in your payments. Ask for a payment arrangement so that the plan functions smoothly. Get everything documented so that you have a proof of all your actions taken. Maintain a file where you can keep their letters and statements. Once you have paid your debt account, they will report it as 'paid' to the credit bureau. Once this is done, you will save your file from being hit with any negative remark in the future.
Do not hesitate to talk to the people who are holding your accounts. I understand that this industry has developed a fear in most of us, but we also have to take care of the accounts with them. So, feel strong and call them today. Send a letter to their mailing address as well and keep a follow up.

Roxette

EMMorgan--
The military is also going to run a credit check on you because they do not want you trying to avoid debt by enlisting. If you have outstanding debts, that could be enough to disqualify you from being able to enlist, just an FYI for you.

Anyway, if you join the military do it for the right reasons. Patriotism, a love for your country. They might be able to get you out of debt, military pay ain't nothing to sneeze at, it could help you get your debts paid rather quickly. But don't join for the wrong reasons.

How about getting a second job flipping burgers at night? How about selling plasma? There are many things you can do to raise money to meet your obligations. If there is a will, there's a way.
