GC services contacted me about 2 months ago stating that I defaulted on a student loan 25 years ago. After arguing with them and the board of education I have no proof that I paid the loan since I have no records anymore. I even called the Department of banking in my state to try to find microfilms from 25 years ago but through all the bank mergers nothing exists anymore. I can't even go the school since the school no longer exists. I paid that loan off 20 years ago but can't proove it. Does anyone have any advice they can give me. The board of education is supposed to be sending me the promissory note I signed 25 years ago. It just seems funny that the board of education supposedly received this loan from the school around the same time the school went out of business 15 years ago. Can someone please help me. They said the goverment will attach my wages to collect.

Linda,

I do agree that it is quite difficult to rescue 20 years old records from the debris of time. Who did you pay it? Did you pay to your school? Chances are Department of Education did not get the loan back from your school as you have mentioned the school was closed some years back.

If this is the case, then the same thing can happen with some other persons too. Try to get in touch with your school mates and see if they are suffering from this type of problem. Then you would be sure that it was a mistake by your school and you can face the problem united.

Another thing, have you spoken to Department of Education by your own? Or GC Services has told you about the wage garnishment and all that. Then I would suggest you contacting Department of Education first and confirm the status of your account.

Please keep us updated in this matter. Feel free to share your problems in this forum.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I have been in contact with the board of education. They did not mention anything about wage garnishment. But they tell me since I have no proof of payment I hav to repay a loan I already paid off. Any other advice while I wait for the promisorry note.
Linda

Linda,

This is very sad that they ask to repay the debt that is already paid off. Anyway, could you remember when you paid the loan in full did it appear in your credit report or not?

Now I'm not sure if it is possible for you to collect an older credit report, however you can make contact with CRA.

You are welcome dawnie :D

FYI???SOL does apply to private student loans, however private student loan issuers and collectors do not admit this fact usually.

It is always wise to continue with student loan repayment as student loans are somehow different from conventional loans. Hope this helps.

I had a $5000 student loan and had paid back $8500 (3500 interest), even though half of that $5000 was supposed to be returned to me, but was not refunded by the school after I withdrew.
Now I am being harrassed by GC services who say that I owe over $14,000 in additional interest.
I am self employed, and own my home. I have nothing listed on my credit report and never have.

WTF is up with this?
Is GC some kind of post Y2k scam outfit.
Or did I borrow money from the mob?

just 1 more possible option....please contact 1-800-4fedaid and track down just exactly who is holding this loan and making these claims. I found 1 compnay that had owned my loan and they never even contacted me....and, I did so using this number. So if it was a DOE funded loan....you should be able to track it down through this phone#. I also always recomend the naca. Here is a direct link to their data base of Attorneys around the country who offer free consultations and they specailize in student loans. http://www.consumeradvocates.org/ I hope this helps a little. Good Luck and please keep us informed.
