Hi Jack
Most of the civil statutes of a state expire after a certain period of time. However, be sure to check the statutes in your state before you refuse to pay this debt legally.
The time period of statute of limitation begins from the date of last activity in the account. When did you last make the payment to this account? On this basis, it will be determined whether you are still obligated to pay the debt or not.
Is the letter notifying any point about the statutes of this debt account? Confirm the period with the attorney general's office in your state and dispute it with the CA in writing. Send your letter through certified mail with return receipt requested. You will have proof of the date on which you corresponded with them. If the SOL period has expired, you don't have to pay it and can't be forced into any legal actions. Make sure that you don't make any payment arrangements with them or pay towards the account. Otherwise, it will be renewed from the beginning.
