a collection company is saying i owe a bill from 15 years ago. there was never any judgment against me and the bill was not valid. can they do this and can they put it on my credit after so many years

Denise,

Once you reply to Shirley's post, it would be easy for the community members to comment here.

However, 15 years is a long time. I'm pretty sure that the SOL for this debt has expired already. You have to check it with your state laws. No one can legally force you to pay a past SOL debt.

Collection agency cannot report the account with a new date. They have to stick with original date of delinquency. Since the debt is 15 years old, chances are it will not appear in your report. If the agency tries to change the date of delinquency, you can dispute it with credit bureaus.

hey stan! I am disputing right now on this very thing. Debt is still within SOL (dell account), and original creditor just updated the charge off date as being jan 2006! it was 2002. I guess they're running out of time and thought they would try and pull a fast one. I caught it right off and have disputed. it was on experian report. am waiting to see what other two reports are showing.

Denise, do not send them any payment! If the bill is 15 years old, it can NOT appear on your credit report and they can't change the date. However, if you make a payment, then it can legitimately appear on your credit. If the account is on your credit report now, dispute it, it cannot legally be on there unless you have made a payment within the last 7 years.

DMj210 is right, first check you CR and make sure that there is not a judgement,if so the SOL will be longer, but dont pay anything until you know for sure, since this will start the SOL back to the beginning.Send a letter to validate debt, and state that the SOL is up on this account,if it is you will not hear from them again.
