i have credit card debt in australia while living there. what are the repercussions now that i'm living back in the states. can this debt be put on my credit report here?

many many thanks for your help... can you also address my question about returning a call to a collection agency? would like to know specifics of what to ask/say? my residential address is currently my mailing address. i'd rather not make this public, though if i ask for debt verification i have to give some address, right?? thanks again...

Most people prefer to use the mail to deal with collection agencies, mostly so that there is a paper trail, and so that there are not any harassing phone calls. However, you can also deal with them through the phone. Perhaps they can fax you the information you request. Here are some things you should ask for:

1. Ask them to send you the agreement which authorizes the creditor to collect debt on the alleged debt.

2. Also ask for a copy of any agreement that you may have signed (a contract or something along those lines) to prove that the account is yours.

3. Ask for any documents showing payments made on the account and that explain how you owe the exact amount they are asking for.

Anybody else have anything to add on this?

We are very glad to be of help to you. :)

back to the beginning (sorry)... so when i return the call, i'd have to confirm my phone number/name to verify the call. by returning their call, doesn't that let them know they finally have the right person. what if i don't return the call? (silly question probably)... thanks.

My best guess would be that you could give them the phone number that they are calling, and that is all. At that point, they will need to prove to you that they have the right to be calling you and collecting a debt. If you don't return the call, I guess they will either keep trying to get a hold of you, or they won't. Is this the debt that is in Australia, or is this a different debt? (Sorry, I get confused easily!)

thanks again! yes, this question is about the debt in australia. i don't know if that's why i'm getting calls, but it's just a guess. could i be getting calls here about a debt in australia? as far as i know, i don't have any debt here. don't worry about being confused... can understand why with all the questions. thanks so much for any further help too...

It is highly unlikely that they are calling here trying to collect on a debt from Australia. If you had caller ID you could post the number here and we could tell you who it is...I wish I could help you more! If you have the number, or the name of the company, post it here and we will work on it. :)

In a recent past it was reported that a person was taken to another country to appear the trial, but the allegations were much more serious in that case. Apparently it seems that your creditor will not go behind you all the way to US, but if you have any contacts in Au, they will definitely try to get it touch with them.

And if the credit card company is a multi national one, having set up in different countries, they can reach to you.

Do the collectors leave any message for you? How do you know that they are looking for you only? The telephone number might have been assigned to some other person in past!

I would also suggest you contacting them through mail or speaking with them when the call. You need to confirm which account are they collecting?
