I followed advice from this website, sent them a letter asking them not to call me and to send me something in writing...I got a letter emailed to me today asking me to pay the principal balance only in 5 equal payments due by March 2010.
They provided me with a physical address in Canada to send the payments to as well as codes and information to send it via Money Gram or Western Union.

Question is, Do I pay them now that they have done this and are willing to just take the prinicpal balance? They are in Canada...seems a little odd. Can they really prosecute me if they are in another country??

as a ethical issue yes you should pay the principal balance to the original pdl. Since they have sent you something in writting, you know have a paper trail to keep. I would not give them any banking info at all. Sending money orders is probly the best, but I did get a prepaid credit card so when i call the payment in I will only have the amount of the payment on the card. I know they may try to get more on it, but I will just file fraud and not pay them a thing if they play that game.

Also make sure you send them a letter revoking the voluntary wage assignment you most likely signed unknowingly when you took out the loan. They wasted no time contacting the hr department where I work looking to collect from my paycheck. I think that I also got an offer like that to settle for the principle but by then I had already filed bankruptcy.
