Mostly the debt consolidation companies charge monthly fees along with the money your pay them towards the debt every month to pay off your debts.

There are some payday loan settlement companies that charge a enrollment fee . The ones that don't usually charge a higher % service fee spread out over the first few months of the program. Its probably not a scam but we would need to know the name of the company you spoke with. OR you could try to settle the debt on your own.
