Yes, I have heard about it. After repaying a debt we forget to take the Paid-in-full receipt from the creditor. A creditor or a collection agency that buys that debt after a long period of time from the creditor may try to collect from you in the future.

Why would a debt be sold to a CA if the debt was paid off? I guess if you don't have a PIF receipt, you can't really prove it's paid off. Maybe, if you had debits taken from your bank account, you can possibly prove it THAT way.
