I spoke briefly with Steve Steinberg from GH&W. He said I owe over $1000 (because of interest) for a payday loan I took back in 2008. I asked him the name of the company and he said it's being handled by PDM. He said he couldn't talk to me when I called him back and wanted me to call yesterday. I got caught up at work and couldn't call him. Now he left me a voicemail saying that the litigators in Hillsborough County (FL) have my work information and are going to serve me papers and I better call him unless I want to go to court. Is this even possible and is PDM licensed in Florida? I don't recall taking a payday loan from PDM but I know these companies switch names all the time.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Wow, I can not believe how crass some of these bottom feeder attorney are! If you have never received a dunning letter in the mail from this bogus law firm, tell them you don't believe a word they are saying, BECAUSE, they are required by federal law (FDCPA to send you a dunning letter within 5 days of contacting you, and since he is dead set on making threats regarding a summons, you are now going to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission for non compliance! And PLEASE, do it! It can be done online, the link is in my signature! I will even call them and pretend to be you! I hate these lying goobers!

When I spoke to him the other day I told him that usually when someone says I owe money I get something in the mail. I told him that I had never received anything from him or his company. He said oh ok well call me tomorrow and I'll get you something.

So is this company a law firm or a debt collector? I'm confused. So then he cannot have me served and take me to court?

Thanks for the info. I did file a complaint using the link.

There should be no need to call a collection attorney to remind him, or inform him you are entitled to a dunning letter, he already knows this! He is just hoping you do not! Personally, I wouldn't give him the time of day, he can't send out a summons to you, that isn't how the court system works, he would need to file a complaint against you FIRST in your local court, then and only then would a summons be presented to you, and people usually don't notify people if they are sending a summons. That statement alone tells me they are bottom feeder collection attorneys (still considered a 3rd party collector).

Ok I spoke with him this morning. Now I know this is a total scam based on his responses to my questions. I told him that usually when I owe someone money they send me something in writing. I said that I wanted something in writing since I didn't know him or his company. He said oh well when we come to an agreement on the settlement I'll fax you or email you. We don't send anything in writing. (Red Flag Number 1). I said can you tell me who I supposedly owe money to? He fumbled around and couldn't give me an answer. He said I can give you your account numbers on your bank account. I said I don't want that, I want to know who I supposedely wrote a check to. He said oh well it was probably something like Joe's payday loans. I said you don't know who i wrote the check to but you supposedly have a copy of my check? You're asking for money and you don't even know the company that says I owe them money (Red Flag Number 2). Finally he tells me the company is SSM Group. He said we'll come up with an agreement then this will come off your credit report. I checked my credit report, there's nothing on there to come off.

I've looked at past forum topics and see that SSM Group is not licensed in Florida therefore if I pay anything at all I'm only required to pay the principal, right? I've also contacted my bank to see if they have any record of this check.

good then your bank will confirm what i;m gona tell you.it's an ACH debit which is not a check.that is why this mope can't give you a check number,or any other info.besides being that the loan is illegal no matter what in FL it is totally non-enforceable.meaning they would have the same chance as ice in august in court.the mope is throwing the BS out hoping to scare money out of you.if you have not filed AG,AND FTC complaints do so,and do not speak to this idiot further as he can do nothing, and he knows it.

Ok so check this out. Mr. Steinberg called me again at work. After that I filed a complaint with the BBB which is currently being investigated. After that complaint was filed I stopped getting calls from Mr. Steinberg although now i'm getting calls at work from a Katie Smith who claims she is from Certified Assets Investigators. She tells me to call back 866-455-6851 however the caller ID reads Goldstein Henderson & Weiss at 623-455-6851. Funny how she is calling me pretending to be important but ini reality it's the same company calling me at work after telling them they cannot. This is getting ridiculous.

if you haven't a complaint with your state AG do it today.also check your state laws in regards to recording calls as if you are in a one party state you can use those threatening messages against them.as in a lawsuit by you,but check into that first, but do file the AG complaint as this scummy bottomfeeder will not stop until you file a complaint with some teeth.the AG complaint is just that.

I have filed a complaint with the state's AG. I have also filed a complaint with the BBB which has been sent to GH&W for their review. I have also updated the BBB complaint with the last few harrassing and threatening calls I've recieved from Mr. Steinberg. Today he called my work (again!) but instead of calling me directly he called the main number. He tried to get information out of one of my colleagues but he told Mr. Steinberg I was unavailble. I don't know what else to do. I have told him 3 times he cannot call me at work but he doesn't seem to care. This harrassment is starting to take its toll on me. Is there a copy of a cease and desist letter somewhere and do you think this will help?

Thanks for all your help so far. Everyone else seems to have gone away except for this guy.

IF you are in the State of Florida, the guy harrassing you is in violation of Florida anti-stalking laws, given that you have told the 100% truth. If you want him to stop, contact the Florida Bureau of Investigation to file a complaint there. Once that is done, all contact will stop within 6 weeks, regardless of whether the debt is a valid debt, or a scam.
