Hard Debit Block/Nat City
Date: Mon, 08/17/2009 - 10:00
I've read all the sticky's on dealing with illegal lenders (and I sure am!!). I cannot close my account just yet due to some direct deposits that can't be switched over in time, however, I was going to ask my bank to do the hard debit block. I bank with National City and I just wondered if anyone else has ever done this with them? They are truly not the most customer oriented bank so I am a little worried about the run around they'll give me. It's also a joint account so I don't know how that all plays into it. I'm trying to get a handle on this but at the moment it seems like I would have a better chance of scaling Mt. Everest than getting my money secure. LOL. Any advice is appreciated!

Just make sure you go into the bank and speak directly to the bank manager. Most banks only allow the branch manager to impose a hard debit block, some of the other employees may not even know what a hard debit block is. Just explain that you have been caught up in a payday loan trap and are doing your best to resolve it. Or, say whatever you are comfortable with.

Have your bank put a block against ALL ACHs, including mortgage, utilities, etc. Contact them and tell them you will be closing the account. The bank should block everything except the deposits. Once the deposits hit, then transfer those funds to a new account and close the old one. That's what my bank did. I did have to pay a fee to have the block put on, but believe me, it was cheaper than letting the drafts hit my account. Good luck.

The bank manager will understand the term 'hard debit block', feel free to use any term you are comfortable with, both mean the same thing basically.

I use National City and put a block on at the branch, but the "corporate office" must have overridden b/c more ACHs went through. I am still trying to figure it all out.
