While going through your Forums, A question came in my mind. How will I know whether a payday loan is legal? Once I took out a pdl, about 5 years back and paid the borrowed sum with the interest.
I took out about $700 and paid back about $1500. I didn't know anything about legal or illegal. if I know, it'll help in the future.

I can tell you another way to check if a payday loan company is legal in your state. Go to the search box in the DebtCC Forums and type the name of the lender. You'll get tons of resources and information about that company. You'll find out if the lender is legal in your state. Moreover, you'll come to know how our community members have dealt with the lender. You can even share your experience in those threads.

Check with your state whether or not payday loans are legal in your state. If yes, find the legal payday lenders in your state.
But why are you thinking of taking out a payday loan? I guess, you already had a bitter experience with payday loans 5 years back. Rather, I would suggest you manage your finances in such a way so that you don't need urgent money.

Hi James!

There are 2 ways to know if the payday loan company is legal or not.

You must contact the office of the attorney general of your respective state. They will tell you about the legal status of the payday loan company.

You can check the bank regulator of your state. They will tell you about the status of your payday loan company.

The USA states which have currently prohibited the infamous payday loans are respectively, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

If you live in one of the states then the payday loan is automatically banned in your state.

What about plain green loans? They are now called installment loans instead of payday loans.
