Great suggestions, Wagtail; I'd also add that people can visit their local library. You can check out books for free, and if you're feeling "down," you can find books by or about people who overcame big odds to succeed in their lives. I'm gradually working out of the PDL mess (thanks to this great site and the folks in the State of MD Financial Div.), and it is a GREAT feeling!

Thanks for those wise words. I am currently working with a debt management Company to rid myself of PDL's for life. I know that they are easy to get but hard to get out of. I had a PDL from the worst of worst. The sub-human was very very aggressive and called my job, references, home all hours of the day and night. I paid him so much money that I was behind on all my bills and as a result my phone was cut off and so was my cable my car insurance was not due until the end of the month which is the same time my mortage is due. I am working with state of MD to get a refund because they are illegal in MD. He has been summoned and refuses to sign the papers to appear in court. I am so grateful to be rid of him and I know he is not sending any money but it would be nice to get some of it back but I'm not looking for any miracles. I have learned my lesson about these modern loan sharks and their lending methods.

I don't understand how people can blame all their problems on payday loans. You knew what it was when you agreed to the terms they are very easy to understand, you borrow an amount you can pay a fee to extend the loan or pay it off on the due date. You are using this service because you had no where else to go. Yes the fees are high, but if you could not afford it why would you do it to begin with. PDL's are a quick fix, but unless you know there is a big payday coming in to cover it stay clear. The longer you go without paying the higher the amount and the more messed up your bank account and credit will get. If you make a payment arrangement stick with it. Call them before you are in default! Avoid having it drafted to start with. If you keep your part of the bargin you should be okay. I am sorry you are in this situation but quick and easy is not always the answer.
I am now registered
Hi! I have registered, and if it kills me I am going to make all of you happy. I want to reiterate that taking your power back and putting your big girl undergarments on and dealing with things will do wonders. I will stress to you again, that paying back PDL's when possible is fine, but don't put your real needs on the back burner. Keep your phone on, keep your lights working, pay your rent, pay your car payment...EAT. Then deal with payments and hassle with these ridiculous companies. Just remember that this is such a small part of your life, you are parents, children, husbands, wives, and friends, and you have people that love you...keep kicking butt and taking names...you have the power....don't let them turn you into a victim. (by the way I am aka Wagatail!)

Marvin, regardless of who you call and how many times you WANT to work things out, the PDL people are relentless, to say the least. Things happen and that added stress is neither necessary, wanted nor should it be put up with. There are laws in place that prevent consumers like us from being harassed, stalked, spoken to condescendingly or treated as inferior. The PDL's are making a lot of money by exploiting those less fortunate, especially since most of the people who have to take out PDL's are medium-low income. Good people who are in hard times will find it hard to persistently pay a fee each week, especially if they are depending on every dollar. Alot of payday loans only let you renew so many times before a chunk is taken out of your account and God forbid your account doesn't have enough funds in it... then the PDL will attack your account with all its might through their d/b/a's and subsidiaries. It's ridiculous and they need to be smited! LOL

Marvin, you have a good point. However many people that are backed into a corner and have no choice at times than to use businesses like this get locked into something that even with a lot of hard work and the best of intentions cannot pay back. The lenders in this industry are for the most part, not honest, and with the internet lenders especially, they seem to change things to suit their own needs. The interest rates are high, beyond high...but then you go to pay off your loan, and find that the interest rate has miraculously changed and even more interesting...,they can't show you a copy of the contract you "signed" agreeing to that interest rate. There are some additional fees here and there...and before you know it, you can't pay it off. Most of these people, myself included, have tried and tried to pay what we owe, but when you borrowed 350.00 and all of the sudden you are told you owe 1000.00 and they want that, by the way, tomorrow..you can see how this can become a problem. What is needed here are hard line regulations for these businesses to follow. Realistic interest rates, no surprise fees, and if and when collections become necessary, they should have to follow some common standards of decency and respect. This site isn't about banishing the payday lender per say, it is about making the process fair, or it should be eliminated all together. They do not have the right to be abusive, deceptive, or threatening. I don't have a lot of sympathy for PDL's because I have experience them first hand, I know what I agreed to, I know what I owed...and yet that changed magically, and that isn't fair. Read the posts here, don't respond and get defensive, just read...and I guarantee you it will break your heart and you will see that this isn't just a group of people saying "boo hoo, I want out of my loan." They are trying to pay their obligations and they are being taken advantage of and that has to stop.
