I got a $600.00 payday loan in December. I don't dispute I owe it. My life has gone steadily downhill since that time, and I had to close my checking account and start over. I contacted a company called PDL Assistance to help me with my many payday loans. I sent a "financial distress" letter to Nationwide. SOMEHOW they managed to get my new account number, which was at a different bank, and withdraw $1100.00 all at once. I am broke now, and distressed. I called my bank, but today is Saturday, and I got their customer service team who said they were 96% sure they could get these debits returned. I am not so sure. They came through yesterday. Can Nationwide DO this? In no way shape or form did I authorize these withdrawals.

Luckily I got a family member to cover the $1100.00 until I can get this clear. I paid other bills, and multiple overdrafts are exactly what I DO NOT need!

Thanks,
CM

Did your financial distress letter formally revoke their original authorization to debit your account? If not, you need to do that right away so they can't go back into your new account. You'll have plenty of time to go back later and worry about state licenses and filing complaints later. Right now, you need to worry about whether you can go into your bank, file a fraud affidavit and get your money back. And if you haven't taken the necessary steps yet, do them immediately so you can at least protect yourself in the future.
