im aware that pdl's are not legal in ny........this may be a dumb question, but is it true that all they can do is call me? can they actually garnish my wages or anything like that?

I am in ny too and from what I've read an assignment is all they can do. Do as shazzers says and send them each a letter revoking the voluntary wage assignment. They will tell you differently, but from what I've read on here all they do is talk. So if you can deal with the calls and harassment you'll be ok.

They also send those assignments to your employer often dressed up to look like real garnishments. Unless your employer understands the difference between garnishment and assignment (or is willing to pay his lawyer $400 an hour to tell him) and knows you revoked it he could end up deducting it from your paycheck anyway. Don't count on the pdl to say "Oh well, she revoked it." and not take a shot. Make sure your employer is in the loop BEFORE the weird letters start showing up in human resources.
